Rollins Benched
Jimmy Rollins was pulled from today's game because he didn't run out a fly ball.
Rollins Benched
Todd Zolecki
What happened to Jimmy Rollins today?
He got benched.
He hit a pop fly into shallow left field with two outs and a runner on second in the third inning this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. Reds shortstop Paul Janish dropped the ball to allow Carlos Ruiz to score from second. Rollins only got to first. He easily should have been on second.
Rollins took the field in the top of the fourth inning, but was gone by the top of the fifth.
"There is no explanation," Rollins said. "I just didn't do it. It happens every once in a while. Sometimes the manager gets you. It shouldn't happen. I'm not disappointed in myself. I know better. Just go out there and make sure I don't do it again. Nothing to get disappointed about. Something you learn from. Don't do it again."
His has a grade three stress fracture in his leg area beneath the upper fibula-It takes months to heal. As I told you he has significant and severe damage to his leg that will ultimately put his season in peril! Truth
He should be benched if he failed to run out the play. Rollins has a lackadaisical attitude this year. (Laughing in the dugout after committing outs, waiting till the last minute to throw to first on ground balls, taking forever to come back from injury) Leron
Was that the original diagnosis or are you saying that was not revealed before now??? G$Money
G, he doesn't know what he's saying. He's and another knucklehead that post here have been saying the Phils misdiagnosed his injury from jumpstreet. I love how he had a fracture yet he's been stealing bases (without getting caught - mind you) and up until recently, hitting the ball (and running) all over CBP. G, I think you're new...you'll soon realize that everything "Truth" posts is the total opposite of what the real truth is. Oh, and according to Truth, Ryan Braun is also hurt too...only because he signed a team-friendly deal. Last I checked Ryan Braun has been raking all over Miller Park. Billy The Kid
Neither. He's making it up as he goes along. veritas

Great performance by Cole today timm
Lancer sends a post about the runs and my post gets 86'ed. Zo that is baloney bro. My post was humorous and timely. Whoever is checking this is a maroon. rockinrob
don't know if Jimmy was benched 'cause he's hurt (but...HOPE not!) or 'cause Unc Cholly was mad at him....feel bad for the guy whose post was "86'ed" by a "maroon" ...but it's probably better than being done in by a MORON....we got enuff of them around these days! FasterEddie
...oh, and another thing, (attn.-"Truth")......if I recall correctly, J-Roll's injury was near the ankle.....so it couldn't be a "stress fracture" at the "upper fibula" ....if anything, had it involved the fibula, it would be at the bottom of the fibula, the thinner, (mostly)non-weight bearing bone that radiates behind the heavier, tibia, and connects to the ankle...similar to what McNabb had a few years back, if I'm not mistaken...From personal experience, a fracture to the fibula can heal in a relatively short time (I think, like 6 weeks or so?).....maybe 8 tops.....Of course, it doesn't necessarily mean the Jimmy's injury might have been more serious than originally thought, but there really haven't been any indications of that since he returned, have there? faster eddie. don't know of Truth is telling the truth, but you certainly can get an injury to the proximal fibula with a severe ankle sprain. Especially if the syndesmosis between the tibia and fibula is injured. ask T.O. 23

Shin bone's connected to the ...knee bone....knee bone's connected to the hip bone... Somebody throw Howard a bone wil;l ya already! And yes, great complete game pitched by Hollywood! dksurf- I broke my ankle on April 5th this year. Cracked Tibia. Rollins sprained his (and no, it's not a cover-up. What would be the point?) My ankle is still sore. I am guessing that if J-Roll was not taken out for a lack of hustle, which I can't imagine, he may have tweaked the sprain a bit. John621
- If you really want to know...Listen to Eskin..he keeps it real
- Eskin says nothing positive about the Phils. He is on Eagles payroll as an unofficial mascot.
Don't mind Truth, when he goes off his meds he rambles. He thinks Howard will win the MVP this year and get 14 MM in arbitration. Charley said in post game it was starightend out, so it doesn't sound like an injury, maybe just discipline for not running it out. jimmymack- Eskin is worse than Rod Barajas and Travis Lee combined. jlamb
Eskin is an ignorant loudmouth. Thankfully Philly area sportsfans can hear some informed opinions on 950 AM on the drive home. The only time I will ever tune in to 610 in the afternoon again is if Eskin is fired on live radio. Bobbyo
what happened was that he DID have the runs. what's not reported is that he sustained a fracture of the tibia while running down the dugouts steps to the bathroom... at least it's not something embarrassing like Carlos Guillen sitting out because of a hemroid. mikeb
what was eskin saying about it? TR- At least Rollins was man enough to admit in the postgame interviews that Charley was right to bench him for dogging it on the pop fly. (as heard on 950 AM today). This is an encouraging development. Rollins is reminding me lately of Deion Sanders on ground outs and pop flys. Maybe he will start to play like the reigning MVP now. RAS
Eskin keeping it real? How long have you been in this city? The only one that's real is Mikey Miss. d27schaal
Jimmy who? Bruntlett for MVP! bobcitydoc

Can't believe we're talking about J.Roll's *injury*. And the only person in Philly more idiotic than Truth....Howard Eskin! Why, oh why, can't we concentrate on the positive?! CONGRATS, COLE, ON ANOTHER COMPLETE GAME SHUTOUT!!! Norma
I agree with Mike on 950AM about the radio announcers not saying a word about the no hitter Myers was throwing. I was listening last night and thought the same thing, why arent they mentioning the no-no? If you are not sitting in the dugout, then it doesnt matter, you will have no impact on the potential no-no. Radio guys especially have to keep listeners informed because there is no screen to look at. GO PHILS!!!!! Clinton, NJ
And Zo......I have a little complaint. Why did your article in the Inquirer this morning have the banner, "Myers' Costly Mistake"? The article itself was fairly complimentary, but the headline made it sound negative. Yes, that one "costly mistake" cost Brett the no-hitter. But he pitched brilliantly! FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE! Thanks for letting me vent! LOL! Norma
I was at CBP Wed. night, and despite the outcome, it was a GREAT game! I don't usually care for *pitcher's duels*. But both Myers and Volquez were brilliant! To see Brett flirt with a no-no, after all he's been through this year, was great. He got a great ovation when he walked off the field. And Clinton, I agree about commentators not mentioning the no-no. I think they believe it might jinx the pitcher. Were the TV guys talking about it? I was sitting above the Phillies dugout and was glued to the screen and the pitchers mound. Barely saw any fielding plays. LOL! Norma
I've mentioned on previous posts that at times Jimmy does not give 100%. Before I say another word, I will say that I love Jimmy and am glad he is a Phillie, but he is a bit too nonchalant at times, prefering to "look" good rather than simply make the play. Several times a year he will take far too much time fielding a ball, getting ready to throw, and finally making the throw. It happened a few weeks ago and the runner was safe. One last thing on the subject: Any player getting paid the kind of money a professional athlete is paid should ALWAYS hustle. Is it really too much to ask a player to run hard for 90 feet? Get real. MrPhillie
Norma I agree about the headline from today's Inquirer re: Wednesday's game. Obviously it captures people's attention to read further. Great game today. Junior came oh so close to #600. Kudos to the Phillies fans today @ CBP for giving Junior a standing ovation. Shows everyone we are really a classy bunch. Onto Atlanta---Go Phils! KarenA
MrPhillie......I agree about J.Roll grandstanding at times. I've mentioned it before. I don't care how much money a player is making. They should ALWAYS hustle. They're taught that in little league. Case-in-point.....Chase Utley. During Wed. game, bases loaded, Chase on first. Either Ryan or Pat flied out to end the inning, but Chase was running so hard, he was on 3rd before he realized the ball was caught. It was almost comical. But that's how you play the game! And that's why Chase has the reputation he has. No doesn't get booed when he strikes-out or goes 0-fer, because everyone knows he's giving 110% everytime he takes the field or steps into the batter's box. Now everyone here knows that Chase is *my boy*, but I do try to be objective. LOL! Norma

'YOUR BOY' Norma?? You speak of Utley as if he just saved the world from being blown up or something. LOL He's an ok player.... Clinton, NJ
"an ok player"???? Clinton......Don't get me started! LOL! Norma
Well Davegas, just as people have wrote above, Rollins has been slacking a litle too much this year with stuff like this, so Charlie sent him a message. Charlie may not be the smartest man alive, but he knows how to handle these guys. Some callers on 950AM made some good points today. This move also sends a message to ALL the guys that if the reigning MVP can be benched for not hustling, ANYBODY can. Charlie sent a message, a little more suttle though, to Victorino when he said Werth can play center and played Werth there. Basically saying Victorino better step it up, and he did, got his average up around .290 after that time. I know it didnt help Vic that Werth was swinging a hot bat at the time, but I think Charlie got his message across to Vic. Clinton, NJ
Oh come on Norma! What awards has he won.....? Clinton, NJ
Hmmmmm? Let me think. A couple of Silver Sluggers. A couple of All Star starts. A couple of NL Player of the Month. A few NL Player of the Week. Oh, wait. No MVP. You're right. He sucks. LOL! Norma
Im kidding Norma! Utley is an Awesome player! Hope I didnt make you cry LOL Clinton, NJ
CLINTON NJ: I agree with you about Manuel. After being with most of these guys for the last few years, he knows exactly how to handle them and how to send messages. It is no accident that we are getting the performance we are out of the bench. Think about it. Almost every time a bench guys gets a start they produce. Also, we are getting great production from guys when the pinch hit and even when they come in late for defense and get an at bat. When the bench guys are producing like this it definitely puts some pressure on the starters. They know that if they aren't getting it done, Manuel will sit them down. Charlie is keeping everyone sharp and it shows. bski
J-Roll being benched is a good thing! Everyone needs to have a reality check every once and a while even the N.L. MVP . . . Go Phightins !! phanatic74.wordpress.com phanatic74
responding to norma, there was a game earlier this year where chase admired a shot to right field a bit too long, and only ended up with a single instead of a double. it wasn't as egregious as what rollins did yesterday, and it is the only time i can remember chase being remotely guilty of this, but it did happen (once). jmudukes79
Good. I'm sick of him laughing in the dugout after flying out. Padilla. Leron
jmudukes79......Hmmmm. Missed that one. Well, nobody's perfect. LOL! And I do notice Chase *day-dreaming* at times when he's on the field. I occasionally have to yell, "Chase! Pay attention!" Maybe I should be Charlie's assistant manager. LOL! Norma
Clinton, NJ......I know you're just kidding! I was *crying* with laughter. LOL! Norma- Charlie absolutely did the right thing. And while it was in public, I do not believe he "showed Jimmy up". What he did was make it clear that this is a ballclub that wants to win a pennant, and that can't happen when players (including the reigning MVP) take things lightly. Jimmy responded properly after the game by admitting it was his bad, and Charlie correctly did not talk about it to the press. Like he said, it's over and done with. Now let's get on with wining that pennant! bobby
- We'll probably never know if Charlie told Jimmy to step-it-up before he got benched yesterday. I can say this matter-o-fact though...Charlie did not address a one-time incident last yesterday with Jimmy, but rather a TREND. Jimmy has shown only occasional glimpses of the player he was last year. Recall his first game back off the DL he had three hits including a HR. His hustle index is way down since then. There were rumblings early on this year that he was not satisied with $8M per year... that he wants MVP (or even Aron Rowand) kind of money. Perhaps the lack of hustle is a manifestation of his perception that he is being underpaid? RAS
YOU people kill me. Rollins has always been the type to run out a fly ball or a ground out. His athletic ability allows him to look "smooth doing so" He doesnt have to flail his arms like an Utley or Victorino to gain top speed, his legs do the work for him. Since he is injured he can not get the speed he needs andobviously doen't want to risk further injury! HELLO---- Truth
Truth......YOU'RE the one that kills me!!!! YOU are toooo funny! How come J.Roll has had no trouble legging it down the line until yesterday? Did you even watch the game???? His facial expression said it all. He looked up, saw where the ball was heading, and took his good 'ol time. When he got to 1st and saw that the ball was dropped, he started to high-tail it to 2nd. Oooops! Too late! He kind of looked like, "Damn!". I think he knew he was gonna' be in trouble. Norma
