Rollins tweets, heads for DL; Polanco activated

POSTED: Monday, August 22, 2011, 2:06 PM

Jimmy Rollins' strained right groin suffered Sunday is apparently severe enough that it will require a trip to the disabled list for the Phillies shortstop.

That's straight from the man himself, who took to Twitter on Monday to announce the news.

"Soooooo this is what we got...mild grade 2 strain. DL," Rollins tweeted. He followed up with another: "Gone till September........."

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. later announced that Rollins has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. To fill Rollins' spot on the 25-man roster, the club activated third baseman Placido Polanco from the disabled list.

Rollins, 32, is hitting .268 this season with 22 doubles, 14 HR, 58 RBI, 79 runs and 28 stolen bases. He has appeared in 121 of the Phillies’ 125 games while committing five errors in 504 total chances (.990 fielding percentage).

Polanco, 35, was originally placed on the DL with a sports hernia on August 16 (retroactive to August 7). In 89 games this season, the 2011 National League All-Star is batting .275 with 40 RBI and 35 runs while posting a .976 fielding percentage, second-best among all NL third basemen. Polanco previously missed 19 games this season while on the disabled list with lower back inflammation (July 5-30).

Should have traded him last year.

Dumb! His trade value was at all all-time low because of 2+ years of injuries, we wouldn't have gotten more than a barrel of oil for him...

I bet the barrel of oil wouldn't pop out as much, and might show more hustle down the line

The good news is it probably cements his fate for 2012

Don't count on it. This is probably one of those unintentional intentional rests just like a lot of the divas out there get. When was the last time bone on bone Chase had a day off. Maybe he just was rested at the start so he would make it through the whole season. Poly and Cole have had theirs so I guess the Piece might be due soon. That is the unwritten side these writers won't write about. For lack of a name I will call it the Chipper Jones effect because he has been doing it for years. A-Rod and Albert too. Cal Ripken's record is safe and Lou Gehrig is rolling over in his grave.

It's good that Rollins will be playing in September and getting ready for the playoffs.

    Grade 2 is a tear not a sprain. Glavis .318 avg.or Frandsen .285 @ LHV.

At least the team decided to DL him immediately. Good thing they didn't DFA Valdez after all as was rumored last month.

You guys who seem happy about this are nuts. Haven't you watched this guy play this year? The play he hurt himself on was spectacular---but just a normal Jimmy play. Losing J-Roll is a huge blow, and would really hurt them in the postseason if he's gone.

All the haters are ridiculous...much better chance of winning it all with him than without..don't be stupid people...

yeah, this is a problem, especially if Polanco can't stay healthy. A batting lineup with both Valdez and Martinez on a regular basis is scary. Just better hope Utley can stay healthy as well, because adding Orr would be death, no matter how good this pitching staff is. And just because Frandsden and Galvis are hitting what they are hitting in LV, doesn't mean anything in the majors. Just wait for the first '0-fer' before people start screaming that they can't play at this level. And this doesn't cement his fate for '12, because a JRoll that plays in 120 games a year is still better than what will be on the SS FA scrap-heap.
