Jimmy Rollins benched by Charlie Manuel during game

POSTED: Thursday, August 30, 2012, 2:58 PM

Did Charlie Manuel make the right move in benching Jimmy Rollins after his baserunning misadventures?
Yes.
No.

This time, Jimmy Rollins was benched by Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.

Manuel had a closed-door meeting with Rollins after the shortstop failed to run out a pop up in Miami earlier this month, but the manager opted not to bench his starting shortstop.

After Rollins hit a sixth-inning pop up in front of home plate Thursday afternoon against the New York Mets, he started to veer off toward the dugout halfway up the first-base line. The ball was dropped by Mets pitcher Jonathan Niese and only then did Rollins start running and he had to stop at first base.

The shortstop then stole second base, but immediately made another baserunning blunder. With pitcher Kyle Kendrick at third base and one out, the infield was in with the Mets trying to avoid going behind by two runs.

Kevin Frandsen hit a grounder to second baseman Daniel Murphy and Rollins broke toward third with Kendrick still standing on the bag. Rollins was eventually tagged out and got an earful from Manuel when he returned to the dugout.

When the Phillies went out for the top of the seventh inning, Michael Martinez moved from right field to shortstop and Laynce Nix took Rollins' spot in the batting order.

More after the game.

If Charlie sat Rollins every time he didn't run a ball out, he'd never make it through a game.

Wonder why Utley can bust everything out of the box and Rollins refuses to?

Although some may think Chawlie has finally grown a set, the fact of the matter is the Stroller should have been pulled WHENEVER he didn't/doesn't hustle, not only when an error makes it impossible to ignore. And why was he allowed to remain in the game?
Anyone want to bet the Stroller is back leading off tommorrow night? And to think the Ruben couldn't see this coming before resigning him when most fans saw this coming a mile away........

I agree. If Charlie has rules he should enforce them all the time. Jimmy should have been benched the last time he did this. Not doing that contributed to it happening again in my opinion.

And I'm sure no teammates called him on it either... this team has zero backbone.

Trade the Rock & Roll Express (Rollins & Rosenberg) for the sons of Dickie Thon, Steve Jeltz, & Marvin Freeman with a grandson to be named later...

Time to send a message to EVERYONE. Kendrick, though, 4 straight very good games. Dubee/Cholly must have finally gotten to him.

The biggest problem is the horrible example JStroll sets for the younger guys on this team. I'll never understand his too cool attitude.

As much as I'd to see Willie Mays Hayes/JStroll/Jim-Me or whatever your favorite nickname is GONE, I really don't want to see Michael Martinex playing SS the rest of the year, even though the games are meaningless. Maybe Cholly should just drop him to 8th in the lineup the rest of the year.
    Only in Philly...

He should be benched for the next game as well.

Here is how the dugout conversation went. Charlie: you know Jimmy the are going to rip me in the papers tomorrow if I dont do anything so are you ok with taking a rest for the last few inning?. JIMMY: Thats fine coach I dont feel much like playing anymore today anyway. Charlie: thats a relief to me Jimmy because the last thing I want to do is offend you. JIMMY: no sweat coach mind if I go in the clubhouse for a cold one. CHARLIE: sure Jimmy go relax for the day. JIMMY: hey coach can I bat leadoff tomorrow? CHARLIE: sure Jimmy what ever you want. Glad we had this talk and noones feelings are hurt

In other news, Kendrick has won 5 straight decisions. Goodness, he could possibly be the only other pitcher the Phils have that breaks into double figures.

If Rollins should just retire. He clearly doesn't give two s...ts about this team.

Apollo that would cost Jpop $22 million. I think he'll hang around.
