Rollins activated; Utley seeing specialist

POSTED: Thursday, September 8, 2011, 12:08 PM

MILWAUKEE -- The Phillies have activated shortstop Jimmy Rollins from the disabled list. Rollins had been sidelined since Aug. 22 with a strained right groin, an injury he sustained during a game against the Washington Nationals.

It remains to be seen if Rollins will immediately move into the starting lineup when the team opens a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday night at Miller Park. With a 10 1/2-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the National League East and an 81/2-game lead over the Brewers for the best record in the National League, the Phillies have the luxury of easing Rollins back into the lineup.

The team also announced that second baseman Chase Utley will see a concussion specialist Thursday after being hit in the head during the sixth inning of the Phillies win over Atlanta Wednesday night. Utley left the game in the eighth inning after experiencing a headache. He will be examined by Dr. Rob Franks at the Rothman Institute.

Ugh, I have a terrible feeling about Utley's injury.

Utley will be out for a week or so and, when he comes back, he'll be rested and able to hit again. Valdez or Martinez can hit at least his .215 for the next week or so.

You really have to wonder how a pitcher like Oflaratty with such a great ERA and walks to strikeout percentages hits Utley in the head and then strikes ut Howard and retires the side without any pitch being anywhere but on or near the plate ?Rollins is probaly not rwady. He has not swung a bat in a few weeks and only took grounders and and did some stretching. We should bring up Galvis to paly short till Rollins returns full time and put Valdez at 2nd. Usw Martinez to give polonco a breather at 3rd. If we can split the 4 with the Brewers I would be happy. (HTML deleted)

Howard needs some rest too. Then we're on to the WS.

I thought MLB had a mandatory 7 day off period for anyone suffering a concussion that went into effect this year......that's fantastic news, because it means we should have a well rested Utley for the rest of the season and playoffs.

I completely agree with naplesbear. Lets have Madsen throw at Uugla the juiced up second baseman for the Braves at the end of the season.

Everyone responds differently to concussions (wee Wright, David), but I take it as a good sign that Utley was not knocked to the ground, writhing in pain. We don't even know yet whether he had a concussion.

Don't think Utley had a concussion. Those helmets are pretty good and the ball hit right on top, not on the side. Of course these lame Philly announcers are so quick to say it was unintentional (1st pitch after the Braves manager is ejected), I don't think it was unintentional.

Retaliation is definitely in order. Don't hit him in the head, of course (only an arse would do that), but Uggla needs to get beaned by a pitch. No fan involvement, please.

Utley will be out 2 weeks

Put David Herndon in the last series of the year to throw at Chipper or McCann.

Sure you want to risk Herndon like that? If he gets suspended, you lose your ace for the NLDS!

Better just have that stiff Halladay peg Larry & McCann.

Better to use Aumont when he comes up. At his size,no one will take him on.

What does Utley's injury say about batting helmets? Why bother if a beanball still concusses you?

If you watched it he stood there dazed. He didn't even know he was hit in the head. This could be bad. I agree with the others Uggla needs to be hit in the next series. Just make sure there are a few guys to protect the pitcher since he will be in a Roid Rage at the time.

It it was as bad as you're describing, he would have hit the ground after having the ball it the top part of his helmet...he's undergoing tests for precautions...He has not been diagnosed with a concussion..If so, he's out for a week, best case scenario.

I'm getting tired of pitchers taking liberties with the Phils' hitters. I know both sides of the argument, you don't want to jeopardize losing a game by putting someone on base, yada yada. But it's long past time for our answer - Monday, September 26th, against the Braves, 1st batter, 1st pitch, you're going down. And the next time the Giants (the worst when it comes to HBP) come to town (not till next year!), 1st batter, 1st pitch, message sent. Time to protect our boys.

Lonewolf you actually made sense about this. Utley will be out 1 to 2 weeks(blessing in disguise)and Herndon would be the perfect guy to use to retaliate when we play the Braves in 3 weeks.

When Utley got hit, it ended the chance for any runs that inning. Howard, who should shut his eyes when swinging against left handers, struck out again with the bases loaded---and everyone in the park knew it was going to happen. Why is Howard playing against left handers?

Howard and Utley have both faced O'Flaherty 12 times. They've both walked twice and been hit by a pitch once. Utley has one more hit, but only Howard has an extra base hit. When O'Flaherty beaned Utley, he gave a free pass to a guy who was very likely to make an out against him. The Braves are not as dumb as you. They don't give away bases on purpose late in games they are desperate to win.

I agree, it is very mystifying that O'Flarety - who's supposed to be a phenom - misses with a pitch to Utley's head. It's a shame most relief pitchers don't bat.

What does that mean, "supposed to be a phenom"? He's not some young rising star. He's on his second team in six big league seasons. Do you have him confused with Venters and Kimbrel, the young studs at the back end of their pen? And do you think that good pitchers never hit batters by mistake? What's more mystifying is why nobody who posts comments here has figured out how to spell the guy's name.

They need home field. Hope this Utley thing doesn't jeopardize that. People who are happy to give him a rest don't seem to get that concussions often have lingering effects.

If you can't beat them, bean them! The Braves might just have something there because it looks like the Phils Pitchers won't protect their guys by retaliating. Next time up, McCann or Borne should have been fast ball head shots but no, nothing. Sorry Chase, they can hit you in the head every at bat, but us pitchers are not going there. That's not so good for Phillie hitters. Atlanta, Arizona and the Brewers just learned something valuable last night. Food for thought: In this game you need balls to pitch!

I like the idea bring up Galvis. Valdez at 2nd and Martinez giving polanco a breather. Give Galvis a chance to see what he will be facing when they bring him up full time

Have Blanton start one of the last 3 games and plunk Bourne with the 1st pitch...that way if ATL wants to retaliate they will have to think about it with plenty of game left. Baseball goons would be a fun thing to see....

Our retaliation against Atlanta and O'Flaherty was a sweet, ninth-inning win that swept the series. Statement rendered and, I would wager, received.

Why dont we wait to we get the scoop from the specialists. How many predicted Chase would not see the field this year? At any rate some rest will be prescribed. I hope not more is needed. Chase brings a sense of order and balance to the Phills. I would hope some level heads would prevail I agree we got the retaliation with Gloads smash

the effects of concussion differ depending on the individual, type of helmet, etc. Charlie's position has never been to hit another player on purpose by one of our pitchers.
Wait until Chase is correctly diagnosed.Specialists in Philly are some of the best in the world in neurology, backed by research and practice.Chase's personality may be to push it, but the year he has learned to listen and be honest about his symptoms!
