Rollins, Madson, Oswalt are Type A free agents

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins and pitchers Ryan Madson and Roy Oswalt have officially been assigned Type A free-agent status by the Elias Sports Bureau rankings, which means the Phillies will be eligible for draft compensation should any of those players sign elsewhere.

In order to receive compensation, the Phillies will have to offer each player salary arbitration by Nov. 23. That scenario is not guaranteed, especially in the case of Oswalt. It's unlikely the Phillies would want to risk Oswalt accepting arbitration and receiving a hefty one-year salary. It seems likely, on the other hand, that will offer salary arbitration to Madson and Rollins.

Under the current collective bargaining agreement, which expires Dec. 11, if a Type A free agent declines arbitration and signs elsewhere, the team losing the player is compensated with one pick from the team that signs him and a compensatory pick between the first and second rounds.

Reliever Brad Lidge and left fielder Raul Ibanez were classified as Type B free agents, but it's highly unlikely either will be offered salary arbitration, which means the Phillies will not be eligible for a compensatory pick for either player.

Minnesota's Michael Cuddyer, who we earlier suggested should be targeted by the Phillies in free agency, (http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/phillies_zone/132916963.html) was also classified as a Type A free agent.

Interestingly, Aramis Ramirez, who opted out of his option with the Chicago Cubs, is a Type B free agent, which means the team that signs him will not have to forfeit a draft pick.

They should target Pat "The Bat" Burrell to replace Howard at 1st base next year. He would come on the cheap now & he would make contact about the same amount of times. He would also only hit about 5 less home runs but his OB % would be higher because he has a great feel for the strike zone.

I am really surprised at Ramirez! I cannot believe that you can sign him without giving up anything. That said, I don't think the Phillies are interested ($$$$).

And surprised Willingham is a Type A. He only had 16 HRs and 56 RBI last year. Although this year he had a career year with 29 HR and 98 RBI. The last two years he had 167 RBI, Raul Ibañez 166. That's one big reason to say no to Willingham.

Grady Sizemore...even if he can be healthy for @ 95 games, he could help at the top of the lineup...1.Victorino/Sizemore 2.Utley3.Pence4.Howard (when he returns, obv)5.JMJjr/Victorino6.JRoll7.3b/orPolanco8.Ruiz

yeah...Pat Burrell has just slightly less than zero chance of ever playing for the Phillies again...and frankly he isnt even worth the major league minimum. Not even close.

i would offer lidge arbitration and take the chance that he accepts - after all, how much could lidge get awarded? he has barely pitched since 2008. he would probably be awarded only a few million, and for that much, i think he is worth it.

given Amaro's track record at signing "complimentary players" expect big 3 year deal for someone 36 or older with a ifetime batting avg under .256 and a big press conference explaining how the Phillies sre over-budget thus preventing him from any more big moves...

Agree. Sizemore is Werth but he walks more (if he is healthy). Take a shot for about 5 million plus incentives.

if only howard hadnt gotten that severe injury on the last play of the year - then we could look at trading him somewhere and going after pujols or fielder. not gonna get a good deal for him now. yes it would be a good idea to move howard - it seems he is uncoachable, like rollins.

Um, Elias determines the free agent status? That seems a bit weird. I'm not even getting into the whole trade/sign thing until December. And draft picks are nothing like football draft picks, so I don't even see the big deal.

Let's say we sign Madson but lose Rollins. And we sign one Type A free agent. That still means we'd net one additional first and supplemental round pick (two picks in all). That's not bad. Alex Gonzalez is a Type B FA who can still play great defense.

Zwarte bad idea offering Lidge arbitration for various reasons, not more important that you can't offer him less than 80% of what he made the year before. So, the Phillies have to offer him close to 10 millions. No bueno.

eman you won't be getting any additional picks because you'll be losing them with the Type A FA. And if the A's sign Rollins, which is a good possibility, we don't get their 1st pick because they'll be protected. We'll get a complimentary one like we did last year when the Nats signed Werth. I doubt we sign any Type A FA, including ours. Think about it, other than two or three closers, none of the players, with the exception of Reyes, Fielder and Pujols are worth losing two picks.

The whole Type A thing seems criminal. I cant believe the baseball players union lets it go. Who would sign 3/4 of the players on the list knowing you lose picks. Kelly Johnson? So you take a chance he isn't going hit .220 again and you also have to pony up a high draft pick? That's nuts and he is one of many on this list. It has to slow down free agency for the whole group of players.
