Resolution for Howard?
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
SAN DIEGO — Ryan Howard will see a specialist again Friday and could finally receive the news he's been waiting for.
"Hopefully," Ruben Amaro Jr. said, "he can start doing more baseball stuff."
Howard has been limited in his rehab from Achilles surgery and a subsequent infection to strength exercises with limitations and some basic on-field work like taking ground balls and playing catch. That could finally change.
Amaro said Howard is seeing the same wound specialist at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital as he saw earlier in the week. There was no news because there was not enough progress in healing.
He had a second surgery Feb. 27 to clean an infection from where the original procedure on his torn Achilles was performed. Howard has yet to run or hit since then.

Hang on to as much pitching as you can, please. Phils can win 2-1 instead of lose 7-4. 2smart4philly
I seriously have had the same problem as Ryan Howard. Some MRSA/wounds - when they are infected - get sooooo deep that it sometimes takes 2 to 3 months before the wound has healed enough to stop keeping gauze on it daily. The one I had on my elbow took 13 weeks to fully heal before it started to look and feel normal again... michael2_19030

Long time Phillies's fans will remember that Len Dykstra (age 30) and Darren Daulton (age 31) played key roles in leading the Phillies to the World Series in 1993. The Phillies spent the next three+ years paying those guys tons and waiting for them to get healthy. That is the norm of big league position players. Among their teammates, Kruk's last year as a regular was '93 and he was out of baseball two years later at 34. Morandini's last year as a regular was age 33 and he was out at 34. Stocker was out at 30. Hollins' last year as a regular was age 31. 1993 was Thompson's last year in a line up at 34. Eisenreich is the only guy who hung around and contributed until age 38. Bottom line, in baseball, 32 & 33 years is close to the end of the road. With the injuries Utley and Howard have, it will be a bonus if they can capture lightening in a bottle and have a hot month or so from here on out. jtj10
Yeah, that worthless GM (according to a certain person) really screwed up getting Pence last year. I guess wb didn't notice that. Also, Mr. Vigoda - exactly HOW do you know about Wheels? Ed3 - I hear ya! #6 - GET BETTER - 100% before you come back. dwp66

Hamels won't get you much unless is traded to a team with big pockets like the Red Sox or Yankees. He'll be a free agent. Lee will get you more. EL Zorro
@ed3 finally somebody with some sense. Where did 102 wins get them last year? Long year FABER
Howard couldnt run before he tore his achillies.Players may actually lap him around the basepaths. Why do they think Howard will be the answer to the offensive woes? They can still pitch around him,if and when he gets hot. sammydelphia
@Penfold...yeah, you would get prospects, but you would get ML ready ones. He might net a better return than what the Indians got back for Sabathia (although Matt LaPorta, the prize is a 27 year old dude in AAA ball and the other three aren't doing that great as well, so there is always a risk invovled). The Phils could always take the chance and hope that they can resign him in the offseason as well, but that is a BIG risk. ESFjellin
You would only get prospects for Hamels because, presumably, a team trading for Hamels at the deadline will be a contender and, therefore, won't be giving up impact bats. Penfold18
@eman
Who are the impact bats? Pence was such a steal, because now there is no-one else out there to be had. Nelson Cruz? Who? JoeinSouthPhilly
Howard & Utley back at all star break - maybe we're the hot team heading into the playoffs this year... Ed3- or not.

Seriously, let's look to 2013. What if we could trade Hamels for a couple of impact hitters, and one of the Baby Aces is ready to move into the rotation that would be: Halladay-Lee-Worley-Baby Ace-KK? Howard is back and just repeats his 2011 numbers. Not asking for the sun and the moon there. Isn't that an upgrade over 2012 and possibly even 2011? eman
It's going to be a long recovery if we're counting down to his return in April. Remember, most of the time it takes a player a year to return. AvoidSundanceVacations
So they think there's been significant progress since earlier this week? It seems strange that for taking so long it would progress so much in less than a week. kmon
Can these wound specialists help with the one between Wheels' legs? AbeVigoda
