Report: Phils Make Offer to Lowe
Todd Zolecki
The Boston Globe reported today that the Phillies have made a contract offer to free agent righthander Derek Lowe. The Inquirer initially reported last week that the Phillies have had conversations with Lowe and free agent righthander A.J. Burnett about potential contracts. The Globe report would indicate that the Phillies' interest in Lowe is more than just kicking tires. But I received no indications today that an offer actually has been made, so temper enthusiasm for the moment. But where there is smoke there can be fire, so I will keep you updated as best as possible.

- Juan Rivera is a stiff and Roco Baldelli is baseball's version of "Mr. Glass." They're better off just sticking with what they have instead of going out there and signing borderline mediocre talent.
jeff......Did I miss something? Where was the talk about moving Chase to the 5 hole? To break up lefties? I agree that Lowe would make a great addition, but it makes me a little worried that the they won't re-sign Moyer. I'll say it again...Hopefully the Phils will see what other teams are offering Pat, and match it. Just can't see anything more than 2 or 3 years. Norma
Rob: Mayberry has loads of value. He's prjected as a power hitting fielder with not too great a glove (kind of like Pat). he is a year away, it seems. Golson (who we traded for him) is prjected as a single double hitter with great speed and good D. We needed power, they needed speed. jeff gross
I love the Derek Lowe rumor. Let's all hope it comes to fruition. I have to admit that I know nothing about the Phils farm system. But if what I read from these comments is true and the Phils have a couple of guys in the minors who will be ready in a year or two, then I say offer Burrell a one or 2 year contract to come back. If he loves it here as much as he says he does, he'll take it. He can go free agent again in a year or 2. The AL is going to have DH spots open in a year or 2. Does everything have to be about the money? How about playing in a place where you say you love it? How about the Red Sox Pedroia signing for less than he could have gotten on the open market because he loves playing in Boston? Burrell made $14 mil LAST YEAR ALONE! If he, his family, children and grandchildren aren't already set for life, then he is a buffoon. I think about Aaron Rowand. If he had taken the Phils offer, he'd have a World Series ring right now. But, now he plays for a 2nd division Giants team and will probably never sniff the playoffs ever again for the rest of his career. And I have no problem at all with Rocco Baldelli playing left as part of a platoon for the next year or 2. Don't blame the fact that the Phils lost in 1981 on the loss of Luzinski. They lost in 1981 because of the players strike/split season format. They were the hottest team in baseball in the first half and could never get it back in the second half since they already had a playoff berth locked up. TexColorado
Norma: No one has mentioned moving Utley (except me) to the 5 hole. I was saying that if you look at possible fixes for LF, he either has to bat 5 or pat in place of teh guy you move to 5. The only possible 5 hitters we have are Utley, Werth, and possibly Feliz, if he hits for power like he was in SF. jeff gross
golson is projected as a fourth or fifth outfielder because he strikes out too much and doesn't get on base. We drafted him as a five tool player but he had turned into a two tool player that had little value (he was ranked as our 12th best prospect). Mayberry was drafted in the first round and once had value but the way he was hitting in the minors his value was diminishing every year. He hasn't been a top 10 prospect for the Rangers in 3 years, so tell me how he has value. Yes he has showed power in the past, especially in college, but his minor league numbers are sub par at best, compounded by the fact that he is old for a prospect (25). I am telling you this guy doesn't have much value right now until he starts performing in the minors and there is no way we can count on him right now (I know the Phils don't). robm0202
What you have to question about Lowe is.... does he have his drinking and personal issues in his life under control?...if not, he may be a disruptive influence on this team and in the clubhouse....will he want to pitch in CBP? If he wants a chance to win another ring, he will.....he's seen the Boston faithful get revved up for a WS win and now he's seen us.....there's no comparison....he'd love to feel the love we have for our team....and he knows it would carry over for him and his family for years if not decades to come....he can just ask Mitch Williams and/or all the members of the '80 team....and of course the '08 team will experience and appreciate the same fate for the rest of their lives as well in all parts surrounding this city. Rob: Last year Mayberry batted: .264 with 20HR and 71 RBI. He had OBP of .317 and OPS of .797. He does strike out too much, and is probably a year away from being a starter/ platoon posibility. He has value, but is not a all star quality prospect. Not ideal in the 5 spot behind Howard given his Ks, but not worthless either jeff gross
If we lost the World Series, nobody would be talking about bringing back Pat Burrell. Enough about Pat Burrell are you kidding me. I'd take a ball girl in left field and sign a good pitcher (Lowe would be great). But I'm taking next year off from worrying. I think whatever they do, they're still the best team in the NL East, even with the Braves picking up Vazquez (old). Calm down everyone. RichardsCaptain08
Pat thanks for your time(your clubhouse leadership?) and your prophetic slumps. Its time to move on and if the Phillies sign Lowe a bonified stud and true #2 option I may buy a season ticket package immediately. these are types of moves champions have to make to stay on top. I just hope its not a Lowell type ploy to get ppl to buy packages in advance. What numbers are being thrown around? Truth
Truth, it's not a ploy by the Phils, they don't need ploys, they just won the WS...if anything it's a ploy by Lowe's agent leaking the offer, to stir up interest from the Bosox and Yanks...... Mark1npt
Hitting 20 HRs between Triple A and Double A at the age of 25 is nothing to hang your hat on, neither is an abysmal OBP of .317 robm0202
