Pursuit of Lopez appears to be over
Bob Brookover, Inquirer Baseball Columnist
The Phillies' pursuit of Houston reliever Wilton Lopez is over, multiple sources said Thursday.
A trade for the Houston reliever appeared to be gathering steam Wednesday when the Phillies brought the 29-year-old reliever into Philadelphia for a physical, but for some reason the talks stalled and then died.
It was first revealed on the Phillies' web site that the deal was not going to get done.
Lopez would have been an attractive and inexpensive alternative to filling the role of eighth-inning setup man, which was one of the team's biggest weaknesses last season.
Instead, the Phillies are still looking for that eighth-inning reliever as well as a center fielder and possibly a third baseman. Lots of work for general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. to do as the winter meetings in Nashville draw near. The meetings officially open Monday.
They wanted too much in the way of prospects. ngfs66

Dont worry folks. The phillies will make a great move and bring back Victorino for very cheap.I exspect will see a team eerily similiar to last years bunch of dogs. spanish7
is madson available? he's probably a bargain after his tommy john surgery hannibal barca
Poor phillies dumb rube gave away the farm the last few offseasons nothing left .This will be the same sorry mess as last season maybe worst. tobyjoe- Madson signed with the Angels this week. I'd bet that if talks got to the point of Lopez flying in for a physical and the deal didn't get done that it is because of his arm - not trade pieces.
Billy Conlin was seen right behind Vern Lundquist at Cindys potato buffet in Clearwater. stoky- Flew in from the Dominican Republic for the cheese did he??

Hmmmm...has all the earmarks of a failed physical to me. As good as he may be, NEVER give up high-level prospects for damaged goods! Phront_Runner
Unlike the Sixer's they found damaged goods not worth the gamble especially if Houston was demanding Tyler Cloyd & Sebastien Valle, and if I know Houston probably a 3rd prospect. Their management like to shiv the Phillies at any opportunity since Ed Wade was in charge there & gave away the cookies. salazar
Amaro remains an incompetent fool, who has done nothing in 4 years worthwhile other than his lucky trade for Lee from Cleveland and then overpaying for 2 good years from Halladay -- he remains an imbecile with no clue how to build, sustain, or now rebuild a baseball team, who should have preceded Andy Reid out of here..when he's finally outhahere after a few consecutive last place finishes, the reubuilding process from the mess he's made wil be worse than what the Eagles will need warbiscuit- This from a guy who knows nothing about baseball. No last place finishes either.
mike l - So he's done nothing good outside of the two good things....hmm.
Sounds like your just hating just to hate. Team has had one bad half a season in the last 5 years, which is pretty good considering the parity in baseball now, there's really no dominant teams. ryanrockzzz - So he's done nothing good outside of the two good things....hmm.
