Sure, the Phillies were happy to have won a game, albeit one that came more as a result of Washington ineptitude than anything else. But the most significant moment last night occurred when when Chan Ho Park felt a “pop” in his hamstring while delivering the final pitch of the seventh inning.

Lemme tell you, this does not sound good. Let’s put it this way: After the game, Park struggled to lift his right leg high enough to pull on a pair of pants.   He now joins Scott Eyre (elbow) and J.C. Romero (forearm) as hobbled bullpen pieces.

“Not good,” Park said, somberly. “A lot of pain right now.”

Park suffered a mild hamstring stain during spring training, and rated this injury as far worse. “No, this is like a pop,” he said. “(Then) I was just a little uncomfortable.”

Charlie Manuel did not sound optimistic. “He pulled it pretty bad,” the manager said.

You all know that the bullpen remains a source of huge uncertaintly for the team. Through all the injuries and ineffectiveness, Park has been a rock. Now, he is a significant question.

By the way, Manuel said he would have used Brad Lidge in a save situation, had Jayson Werth not put the game away with a granny off that stellar Nats bullpen.

I had a 3rd degree(worst) hamstring about a year ago and if Parky has that he's done for the year. It was a 2-3 month recovery. Now if Parky has a less severe 2nd degree strain he might be able to get back in time for 2nd NL Championship or WS 3-4 week recovery, but you figure Park will have the best treatment money can buy so perhaps sooner. Time for a new hero to step up in the meantime. Whoever is the odd man out in the playoff starting staff(Happ-Pedro) should be put in the Pen right now to get them acclimated because they will be much needed to full Parkys role.

What the hek...the Phillies won their 4th straight...almost their 3rd consecutive shut out and you down this win? This was a great win...we did it on all sides of the ball. We stole home, we used small ball and long ball to score runs, our pitching was great, and we made great defensive plays. So what that is was just washington...that doesn't make our efforts bad. And how was the win a result of washington's poor play? Are you seriously discrediting the Phillies stellar play tonight?

It sucks, but we can just move Walker (of the 1.93 ERA) into Park's spot and we should be alright...the front office has provided depth of pieces (finally) and we can absorb these bullpen injuries and still have a big shot at repeating.

Why is this content so unprofessional? I'd think that Columbia would instill some pride in the craft. This is like a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10, varying fonts, incorrect spacing. It's horrible.

Umm it's a blog entry, not a piece of journalism. Calm down there pal.

It's okay. As much as we'll miss Park, we have other options. Walker is coming on big time. Condrey is off the D/L. Eyre and Romero will be back. Myers is still out there. We'll be okay.

[Manuel said he would have used Brad Lidge in a save situation, had Jayson Werth not put the game away with a granny off that stellar Nats bullpen.] Dumb Cholly missed a golden opportunity to ease Lidge back into a 9th inning role by letting him pitch tonight with a 6-run lead. It could have been a confidence-builder for Lidge. That Manuel is waiting for a save situation to use Lidge is scary (and foolish).

Give up, GPG13. Jackazzes that start their sentences with "umm" (like dscott) aren't worth trying to reason with.

Between Murph's Fonzie picture and Martino's new greaser picture, it's like an S.E Hinton novel in here. Stay gold pony boy.

"Park suffered a mild hamstring stain". Best typo ever. I suffered a mild hamstring stain once after dollar taco night.

The big picture is a lot more injuries this year than last for what ever reason. Getting loose and staying that way is always a big problem for those who sit and with this miserable weather it won't get any easier. If they put Happ back in the starting rotation their crazy, he's not going to be starting in the post season so why not get him used to where they really need him. I don't see Romero as being ready to help in the playoffs but Eyre might, depending on how soon he comes back. Pray the starting 8 stay healthy till this is over.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
