Placido Polanco had two tears repaired in his abdomen. (Ron Cortes/Staff file photo)

What are your expectations for Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard this season?
I expect him to rebound and have a solid season.
I’ll be happy if he returns and splits time with Jim Thome.
I have a bad feeling this is the beginning of the end.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — It wasn't until doctors repaired two tears in Placido Polanco's abdomen when the third baseman understood how hurt he was.

"Every time I coughed, every time I laughed," Polanco said, "it hurt."

Polanco, 36, came to spring training Wednesday confident he can stay healthy, like just about every baseball player this time of the year. There are serious doubts about his ability to stay on the field, and they are reasonable. Polanco has missed 70 games in the last two seasons combined. Now, he's a year older.

The back, elbow and abdominal injuries that befell him are healed. Polanco hit .398 last April and .243 for the rest of the season, a sign that his body broke down.

What does he want to forget from 2011?

"Everything," he said. "Everything but the Gold Glove."

Polanco had offseason surgery to repair a double sports hernia. Doctors told him one of the tears was serious and the other was about to reach that point. Polanco said it wasn't the pain that bothered him during the year, but the general weakness that overcame his body. When Polanco wanted to do actual baseball work before games, he was bound to the trainer's room for additional treatment just to keep him on the field.

He said he spent the winter taking ground balls, running and hitting. He is cleared to participate fully in spring training, but Charlie Manuel said earlier in the week he could limit Polanco in Grapefruit League play. That would ideally keep Polanco fresher for the season.

Polanco said Wednesday he was unaware of any such plans. He had yet to speak with Manuel. For now, Polanco plans on proceeding as usual.

"You have to think like that," Polanco said. "You can't think, 'Oh, I'm going to get hurt.' I got fixed. I did a good rehab. So, we'll see. I think I'm going to stay healthy."

New acquisition Ty Wigginton started 62 games at third base for Colorado in 2011 and will provide insurance at third. But asked how many games he'd like to play in 2012, Polanco set his sights high.

"The goal is... how many games do we play?" Polanco said.

One hundred sixty-two, he was told.

"That's the goal," he said.

The Phillies will pay Polanco $6.25 million in the final year of a three-year deal. He has a $5.5 million mutual option for 2013.

When healthy Polanco is one of the best third sackers in both leagues, for him, the team and us the fans I hope he stays that way the whole season and beyond, just sayin'...

    Quite agree.
Expect there would be some nicks, but the team needs him to be able to avoid the long and nagging!

I hope he's right. Polanco is a solid MLB player who does all the little things right.

Placido Polanco is an old pro. He is one of those magicians with the bat and if he is healthy, I do not think that age alone will muffle his bat. He never was a speedster.

His glove is obviously still a magnet and his arm will keep Ryan Howard or Jim Thome from having to stretch for his throws. He may not hit .310 but wouldn't a nice .285 look good either in the #2 hole or near the bottom of the order? He is a good base runner and knows how to take advantage of what the pitcher and fielders give him.

The Phils have been winning for so long now that I forgot how to be a pessimist thouigh I am still haunted by that steal of home that triggered the slide in 1964.

Chico Ruiz, top of the sixth. Art Mahaffey to this day blames Gene Mauch for making him pitch from a full windup, instead of the stretch on that play.

Gene Mauch was the precise forerunner of Tony LaRussa. Make a move, make another move, make one, or two (how many remain), or a dozen more moves!
The real difference was that TLR was blessed with much superior talent than was GM!
As with Mr. Mauch, most of Mr. LaRussa's moves really didn't amount to a row of beans, and both were able to MISmanage their teams out of more wins than otherwise.
The thing about GM was, in 1964, he referred to the team as "WE" before the collapse began and "THEY" after. The dope kept "praying" for a rainout to give either or both Jim Bunning or Chris Short that day of rest they needed but never could figure that all he had to do was pitch someone else to get them the day of rest they needed.
Both GM and TLR snatched defeat from the jaws of victory more often than the other way 'round?
I still despise Gene Mauch! and don't care about the much over-rated Tony LaRussa!

If Polanco is healthy he should hit .300 it's not like he hasn't done it before. He is a great 2 hole hitter and a Gold Glover at 2B and 3B. A consumate Pro, I hope Polly stay healthy and in the lineup for the next two seasons, at least. Every team needs a guy who personifies "team player." Polanco is exactly that.

Wait, did he seriously not know how many games they play in a season?

Maybe the first month of the season, and he'll be on the DL by May 1st. These old guys keep breaking down and this year will be no different. The Phillies need to upgrade 3B big time.

Another question asking for a frivolous guess at the future! At Placido Polanco's age, one almost would expect some injury issues during the season. The real question about the injuries would seem to be whether they will be minor and short-"lived" or long and nagging.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
