Players are trickling into the Phillies' spring training complex in Clearwater, Fla. The official first day of workouts, for pitchers and catchers, is Saturday, but some early birds are getting a head start.

jeff, take it easy. They don't even know who's going to DO it yet. The only stuff posted here is placeholder stuff until someone starts rolling with it. Besides, I might note that (though I appreciated Zo well enough), the last several months of blogs were nothing more than very slight rewrites of whatever he put in his column that day. It was like reading the same filing twice.

Marty is correct. Jim Salisbury is doing features, his column and trying to post here. Frank Fitzpatrick is also down there, that's two pretty sharp baseball guys. Until they name a beat writer, who also gets this blog, count on some dead time. Personally, I'd love to see Fitzpatrick back on the beat, although I'm not sure he would. He's smart, funny, knows baseball (except for the relative merits of Bobby Abrau...LOL), has a well honed dose of wise aXX and writes well. If he got this blog it would be a hoot.

I do like Todd a lot because he seems like a good guy but I agree with Marty too. All Zo would do lately is rehash what he wrote and what other inqy writers wrote in their columns, he never added anything new. Now while Dave may come off as corny sometimes, he actually adds new stuff to the blog and doesn't just rehash what he wrote previously. Something I would like to see with this blog once they find someone to take over the beat is to include personal experiences down in spring training, like Dave does, as well as new information not found in the columns.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover
Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.
This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
