Phils will scout Washburn, still talking to Jays

POSTED: Tuesday, July 28, 2009, 8:04 PM

What is the best potential move for the Phillies as the trade deadline approaches?
Trade their top prospects for Toronto’s Roy Halladay.
Trade slightly lesser prospects for Cleveland’s Cliff Lee.
A trade for Seattle's Jarrod Washburn would be acceptable/.
Trade for a relief pitcher.
Keep their top prospects and stand pat.

Here's a dispatch from Jim Salibury, up in Seattle.  The Inquirer has the Western time zone covered for you this week.

Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi indicated that he's still in contact with the Phillies but they still haven't met his price for Halladay. ``We still need to be motivated and we haven't been motivated,'' said Ricciardi, who still maintains that he doesn't have to trade Halladay, who pitches tomorrow in Seattle.

Ricciardi said other teams are in it, though he would not comment on the teams.

Clearly, he'd still like to get pitchers Kyle Drabek, J.A. Happ and outfield prospect Dominic Brown from the Phillies.

A baseball source with knowledge of the Halladay negotiations shot down a report that said the Red Sox had offered pitchers Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden and outfielder Ryan Westmoreland. However, there were indications that the Red Sox were willing to put Buchholz in play. That would not help the Phillies' chances because the Jays like Buccholz more than the Phillies pitching prospects being mentioned.

Phillies superscout Charley Kerfeld is slated to scout Seattle's Jarrod Washburn tonight and Halladay tomorrow in Seattle.

Wally, if you think that negotiations stopped when the Jays rejected the phillies offer, you're fooling yourself. Guess what, the Phillies aren't always honest and sometimes talk with teams, without telling the public.

How about Happ, Brown, Marson, Donald, Carrrasco, Mayberry.

So Halladay is pitching tonight and the Kerfeld is scouting him tomorrow? Which is it?

If the Phils pick up a starting pitcher and the trade doesn't involve Happ and Lopez continues to pitch well and let's say Pedro isn't ready ... can we please sit down MOYER.

I agree. Go get another Blanton....either Harang or Garland....and don't mortgage the future.

How about Jeff Stone, Randy Lerch, and Jeff Ruland -- think we can still find him?

I think Amaro is just scared to make the proper trade and it might come back to burn us. He'd rather try to get Halladay on the cheap, but in the meantime other teams might be motivated to step up while the Phillies dawdle. This deal should have been sealed a week ago (Brown, Drabek, Happ) and Halladay should be making his first start tomorrow for the Phillies. The Phillies haven't been positioned like this ever in their history. The next chance might be long after we are all dead.

drjimmy *** I understand the possibilities that surround negotiations. I also understand that when a certain GM, who closed the door on those negotiations, gets a phone call from a Philly reporter, he's probably gonna get as much mileage as he can out of it as he can.

Yeah, Wally, I think you're not seeing the picture clearly. Ricciardi is playing a game of chicken, seeing who will blink. He would be a fool to show his hand before Friday. He would be a fool not to listen to all offers - and I'm sure the Phillies are in constant contact directly or indirectly with the Jays GM to try to gauge their interest - and hope as the clock winds down the Phils sweeten the pot. He might already be willing to take the offer the Phils have on the table, but by making the Phillies front office sweat, he's hoping to get more bang for his best player. My hunch is that Halladay has already said he wants to go to Philly and possibly Boston and it's down to those two teams. I think Amaro should make a show of starting to look to address the bullpen or right-handed bench player, and come back after putting out feelers and tell Ricciardi he's considering dealing Donald or Marson for someone else, see what his reaction is. The Jays will deal Scutaro, so they'll need a shortstop. They scouted Donald Tuesday. We'll see, but I'm confident Halladay will be with the Phillies for the stretch run to another World Series.

1980 - originally Ricky said the 28th was real deadline for this reason. "i wouldn't ask him to pitch in that situation". this made no sense to me except it fit w/ Ricky's aggressive/bluffing strategy. he can't change it now. OK to bluff if you can live w/ the results.

I just watched Lidge give up a 2 run bomb and almost cost us a win. Lidge is absolutely pathetic this year. We need Pedro or Myers as our closer. I do not feel confident with our pen. We have a starter that gives up 1 in 8 innings, and then the closer gives up 2 runs without an out. I am tired of seeing Lidge give up runs. His ERA is well over 7. BJ Ryan was cut, and he had a lower ERA than Lidge. Mark my words...we will get knocked out of the playoffs by our pen giving up leads.

Halladay would be great, but people act like Cliff Lee is a disaster waiting to happen. He is slightly younger and cheaper than Halladay and last time I checked has the more recent Cy Young. The lefty-righty concerns are overblown...good pitching beats good hitting. I'd be thrilled with either of them.
