Phils will scout Washburn, still talking to Jays

POSTED: Tuesday, July 28, 2009, 8:04 PM

What is the best potential move for the Phillies as the trade deadline approaches?
Trade their top prospects for Toronto’s Roy Halladay.
Trade slightly lesser prospects for Cleveland’s Cliff Lee.
A trade for Seattle's Jarrod Washburn would be acceptable/.
Trade for a relief pitcher.
Keep their top prospects and stand pat.

Here's a dispatch from Jim Salibury, up in Seattle.  The Inquirer has the Western time zone covered for you this week.

Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi indicated that he's still in contact with the Phillies but they still haven't met his price for Halladay. ``We still need to be motivated and we haven't been motivated,'' said Ricciardi, who still maintains that he doesn't have to trade Halladay, who pitches tomorrow in Seattle.

Ricciardi said other teams are in it, though he would not comment on the teams.

Clearly, he'd still like to get pitchers Kyle Drabek, J.A. Happ and outfield prospect Dominic Brown from the Phillies.

A baseball source with knowledge of the Halladay negotiations shot down a report that said the Red Sox had offered pitchers Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden and outfielder Ryan Westmoreland. However, there were indications that the Red Sox were willing to put Buchholz in play. That would not help the Phillies' chances because the Jays like Buccholz more than the Phillies pitching prospects being mentioned.

Phillies superscout Charley Kerfeld is slated to scout Seattle's Jarrod Washburn tonight and Halladay tomorrow in Seattle.

Tim, there's no indication that Lee is any cheaper. In fact, all of the scouts I see quoted in articles outside the Philly press would suggest that he's going to be about the same price. The throw-in at the end of the deal might be a lesser prospect, but all indications are that the Phils would still have to give up Drabek and Taylor/Brown. Given those conditions, you go after Halladay. He's more proven--Lee has only been considered a dominant pitcher this year and the year before--and he's a righty, which would help solve the imbalance that is already evident in the rotation. Halladay, Halladay, Halladay.

The art of negotiating is playing things close to the vest. IF the media reports on offers, rejections, demands et al are true, then its likely the Phils are in the driver's seat as Rubie has been the most silent one. The Jays GM comes across as a jerk.

stop2think, when we CC ever mediocre? The dude is carrying a career 3.67 ERA and won the CY in 2007. He was the biggest trade deadline aquisition of any team last year and basically carried the Brews on his back to the postseason. In any case, Halladay is the best pitcher in the AL period and the Phils need to figure out a way to get this done, even if it is only for a 2yr rental...
