Phils Were Close to a Starter, Had A Shot at Manny

The Phillies fell short in their quest for a lefthanded reliever and a righthanded bat, but they came closest to a No. 4-type starter.

Phils Were Close to a Starter, Had A Shot at Manny

The Phillies had about an hour left before today's 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline and thought they were close to a deal.

Lefthanded reliever?

Righthanded bat?

Nope. They felt they came closest in a failed three-team trade that would have landed them a No. 4-type starter that apparently would have bumped one of their current starters from the rotation.

“We got agreement from one club and they were trying to get agreement on players from the other club,” Pat Gillick said.

Gillick said the Phillies had a good feeling they would be able to pull off that trade. He also said they had a good feeling at one point they would be able to acquire Manny Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox. Ramirez instead went to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-team trade that involved the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“Yeah, we were talking about it,” Gillick said of Ramirez discussions. “We were involved. We couldn’t get where they wanted to be. And we couldn’t get where we wanted to be.”

Did the Pirates seek too much from the Phillies?

“We could please other clubs,” Gillick said. “It’s just that we’ve got to please our club a little bit. We think we know what the value of those players are. Not only the players on one side of the fence, but on our side of the fence. You have to really evaluate that and we just thought maybe that was a little too rich of an ask for us.”

Good win tonight but it's ridiculous this team couldn't get some help for down the stretch. I don't want to hear about saving players for 2010- our window is open NOW. The Dodgers, Angels, Brewers and Cubs went for it. We can look forward tot he September callup of J.D. Durbin and Eaton. What a joke.

Pat, picking up the phone and chatting about possible trades does not mean you tried very hard. "Possible" does not mean "probable." When you take the top prospects and players off the table from the beginning, it doesn't take a genius to realize how far the negotiations got.

Playing the Nats and sweeping them was exactly what the Phils needed. Get some swagger back and get back that winning feeling. As much as I wanna see Happ start, I hope Blanton starts pitching good for this team. They gave up alot for him, so I'd like to see the Phils get some good performance in return. I think he'll settle down and be alright.

Thank goodness Ed Wade didn't give into the fans and trade prospects for a quick fix. We wouldn't have Utley, Howard, Hammels. Let's see at the end of the year what transaction paid dividends. Fans are fickle, they want every free agent, any trade will do, forget about prospects who needs them. Gillick didn't give in....Everyone needs pitching , who gives away pitching anyway ? Fools..Free agents ? Ask Detroit.. All you Leland fans, where you hiding ? All I wanted was a catcher, nobody can compete with Yankees when they want something. So I can wait till next year for a catcher..

I am glad that we did not mortgage our future for manny or anyone else. A right handed bat we do not need. first place, July 31- what a difference a year makes!

This is the most ridiculous article i've ever seen. Ohh you ALMOST pulled off all these trades? Well thats terrific. I'll see all of you fellow posters at the ALMOST WORLD SERIES CHAMPS parade! And we wonder why no championships in 25 years. Um because 3/4 of our teams never make the bold moves. Bunch of losers. Granted the Flyers havent pulled it off yet either, but at least they always go all out because they want to win NOW every year.

Loved Mitch Williams response to Chase getting plunked tonight! Though it obviously was puposeful, at least it wasn't Lannan. I'm sure the bench would've cleared. Come to think of it.....That would have been fun! And really put some fire in the Phils! LOL!

The problem isn't that they didn't want to part with prospects for Sabathia or Harden. The teams wanted the ONLY prospects they have. The biggest problem with this franchise come trading deadline is that our minor league system doesn't have many prospects. At some point, ownership has to realize that you have to build from within. You have to draft well (failure #1) and then grow them (what is it with all the arm injuries to #1 draft picks? You think something wrong with the way they're teaching them?) Then you can make deadline deals to get that rental player to put you over the top. Carrasco is going to replace (pick anybody but Hamels). Marson is two years away, but he's going to be a foundation player. If you trade all your future replacements, then you will spend a fortune on free agents trying to plug holes that you could have grown a player to fill. Or wind up being the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Didn't the Flyers make it into the play-off on the last day of the season ? It's baseball season. The great American past time. WNBA gets better ratings than hockey, whats that tell you ? Maybe you'd be happy if the Phils signed a couple of Russians...August 1st and were in 1st. The Mets are scratching their heads, we took their best shot and were still standing....go phils

They landed Freddy Garcia, remember? And they only had to give up their future #1, Gavin Floyd. (That will turn out to be one of the worst trades in Phillies history. Way to go, Gillick!)

i still say we should have gotten harden.all i have to say. seriously what do we need manny for? sure it would be nice to have him in the order, but do we really need MORE offense? harden would solve almost all our problems. Hamels, Harden, Myers, Kendrick, Happ..i can only dream

Even if the Phillies win the division, they won't win more than 88 or 89 games - the same number of games the team won every year with Larry Bowa as manager. The only reason the Phillies made the postseason last year was because the Mets collapsed. Gillick proved to be no better a GM than Ed Wade.
