We just caught wind that the Phillies have acquired lefthander Scott Eyre from the Chicago Cubs.

It appears single-A Clearwater pitcher Brian Schlitter was part of the trade.

Details to come.

Update: It's official. The Phillies have traded Schlitter to the Cubs for Eyre. The Cubs designated Eyre for assignment this week after he went 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA in just 19 appearances because of two stints on the disabled list. He had 14 scoreless appearances to start the season before he got rocked in his last five. In the official team press release, the Phillies mention that six of the nine earned runs Eyre has allowed have come against American League teams, for whatever that's worth.

He has held lefthanders to a .259 average and .244 average for his career.

Schlitter, the team's 16th round pick i n2007, was 4-3 with a 2.22 ERA and six saves in 34 games for Clearwater.

Eyre's acquisition fills a need for another lefthander in the bullpen, so you have to imagine J.A. Happ could be headed back to triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Um, they can have the second coming of Cy Young coming out of the bullpen, but when they can't score any runs, it won't really matter. Clueless.

notagain, it isn't the GM, it's the uncommitted-to-winning cheapskate ownership who bind him hand and foot and leave him with the eyres of the world. first thing they teach you at Wharton...if the turnstiles are spinning and you're printing money, NOTHING IS WRONG.

Eyre don't light my fire. They need an offensive sparkplug or two. Jenkins seems shot. Rollins has not done what he needs to do. I can't wait until September, when Pat and Charlie can load up the roster with one-dimensional hackers. No joke - they've got a knack for those types, and it always seems to help the way the Phils play ball.

Hey Phils, Roberto Hernandez and Jose Mesa are available. Enticing isn't it?

I can't believe Manny got two curtain calls at CBP today. That was awesome. Oh, yeah. I forgot our GM has no guts. We Phillie fans deserve better. The only thing this team is missing is a bat for rightfield. Manny, the second best right-handed hitter in all of MLB, was available for very little and we didn't do a thing. I'm so glad we got a LHP, though. He'll really make a difference once or twice a month.

Bigroll is 100% correct. Ed Snider would give his left nut to win a championship but unfortunately he's the owner of lesser tier sports, give him credit though he's capped out in 2 different sports and goes after the best players money can buy. Meanwhile you have these Mainline Misers worried about who can buy the biggest most expensive mansion. You will never see the Phils go after CC Sabathia because they will not pay that guy $20 M a year...37 sellouts and these a-holes give you Blanton and Eyre. Unbelievable. The joke is on the people who pay $186 for a family of four who su[pports an organization not committed to winning.

Maybe if we're lucky the Phils will leave Ruiz in San Diego next week. Is it too much to ask for an unselfish, pure leadoff hitter? I guess it must be.

What about HAPP????Are they going to let him rot in the bullpen?

Yeah, they need a LHP for the 'pen. But did they need this one or one of the better ones that were available at the deadline? I'll bet the latter. Yep, watch the scrap heap wheel turn, it doesn't cost much to give it a spin and that's what's most important in the Phillies' world.

How many runs did the Phils score today? I think the brass may have mis-dentified the problem ... we don't need more anyone, we need our stars to be more consistently good/up to their normal stats, or we have no shot.

I dont know what they know that I don't. I know they got a LHRP in AAA with a 2.67 ERA who is 30+ years old. When are they going to call him up, when he's ready to retire?? I agree with wmontanez27, why trade when you have the pieces in house??
Comment removed.

jeff gross, they Phillies are following the Eagles arrogant ways, and obviously know more than you. Adding a LHP RP was a need, but not a guy with a +7 ERA who was being sent down by the Cubs before the Phillies inquired on him. I wish Ed Synder would purchase the Phillies! The man just wants to win!

I find it difficult to understand why the brain trust does not give opportunities to the players in the organization. Eyre was a good pitcher in the past. He may help now. Why not trust Walrond or a randolph from the minors? Pitchers/players are not always better from another organization. Trust and built some confidence from within the organization. This team needs the influx of some new blood. There is very little enthusiasm. The hated Mets brought up Murphy and Reyes 2 recently. Murphy is helping. For now he is actually making contact at the plate.

Evidently, the Phil's brass doesn't know how to pronounce or spell Randolph or Jaramillo. When you can't score runs against a team with a $22 million dollar TOTAL payroll, what's the difference who's in the bullpen? I think everyone better get a real good look at Cole Hamels, because he's "outta here" upon becoming a free agent. If you got the run support he does (none), would you sign a long-term deal to pitch in that bandbox!? No, of course you wouldn't. There is NO WILD CARD coming out of the East, and you can't win the division losing two of three to the Fish and Mutts every time you face them. Time to sell 'em all off and start from scratch -- again.

Why are we trading a prospect for this has-been?

They need a bat. Period. They just got shut out, AGAIN. This is not the offensive juggernaut the front office thinks it is.

This falls into the who cares column. Memo to ownership...please sell to someone who might try to win a world series. I feel like Clark Griswold, just drove to WallyWorld and found out it was closed. And oh yeah, nice effort today boys.

WTF, you have a great lefty sitting in Lehigh Valley. Bring up Randolph already. For those who don't know he's 2-0 with 2.67 ERA in 33 IP with 2 saves. 50K 24 BB. What are tehy waiting for???

Awesome. This is what we needed. Now we'll be out in 4 games instead of 3 like last year. Great pickup. He probably has a higher BA than Ruiz too!

Amen, brother. Of course, they know this is not a World Series caliber team.

Todd, yeah a second lefty reliever will push them over the top. Now everyone, Charlie, Pat, and the writers, can attempt to uncover the real issues of this team's poor performance.

Earth to Phillies: If you intend to win the World Series, you will have to play an AMERICAN LEAGUE TEAM! This press statement along with the players' and coaches' dismissive attitude about their failures in interleague play (remember that in June?) mystifies me.

Andy Martino is in his first season on the Phillies beat.
