We just caught wind that the Phillies have acquired lefthander Scott Eyre from the Chicago Cubs.

It appears single-A Clearwater pitcher Brian Schlitter was part of the trade.

Details to come.

Update: It's official. The Phillies have traded Schlitter to the Cubs for Eyre. The Cubs designated Eyre for assignment this week after he went 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA in just 19 appearances because of two stints on the disabled list. He had 14 scoreless appearances to start the season before he got rocked in his last five. In the official team press release, the Phillies mention that six of the nine earned runs Eyre has allowed have come against American League teams, for whatever that's worth.

He has held lefthanders to a .259 average and .244 average for his career.

Schlitter, the team's 16th round pick i n2007, was 4-3 with a 2.22 ERA and six saves in 34 games for Clearwater.

Eyre's acquisition fills a need for another lefthander in the bullpen, so you have to imagine J.A. Happ could be headed back to triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Earth to Phillies: If you intend to win the World Series, you will have to play an AMERICAN LEAGUE TEAM! This press statement along with the players' and coaches' dismissive attitude about their failures in interleague play (remember that in June?) mystifies me.

Todd, yeah a second lefty reliever will push them over the top. Now everyone, Charlie, Pat, and the writers, can attempt to uncover the real issues of this team's poor performance.

Amen, brother. Of course, they know this is not a World Series caliber team.

Awesome. This is what we needed. Now we'll be out in 4 games instead of 3 like last year. Great pickup. He probably has a higher BA than Ruiz too!

This falls into the who cares column. Memo to ownership...please sell to someone who might try to win a world series. I feel like Clark Griswold, just drove to WallyWorld and found out it was closed. And oh yeah, nice effort today boys.

They need a bat. Period. They just got shut out, AGAIN. This is not the offensive juggernaut the front office thinks it is.

Why are we trading a prospect for this has-been?

Evidently, the Phil's brass doesn't know how to pronounce or spell Randolph or Jaramillo. When you can't score runs against a team with a $22 million dollar TOTAL payroll, what's the difference who's in the bullpen? I think everyone better get a real good look at Cole Hamels, because he's "outta here" upon becoming a free agent. If you got the run support he does (none), would you sign a long-term deal to pitch in that bandbox!? No, of course you wouldn't. There is NO WILD CARD coming out of the East, and you can't win the division losing two of three to the Fish and Mutts every time you face them. Time to sell 'em all off and start from scratch -- again.

I find it difficult to understand why the brain trust does not give opportunities to the players in the organization. Eyre was a good pitcher in the past. He may help now. Why not trust Walrond or a randolph from the minors? Pitchers/players are not always better from another organization. Trust and built some confidence from within the organization. This team needs the influx of some new blood. There is very little enthusiasm. The hated Mets brought up Murphy and Reyes 2 recently. Murphy is helping. For now he is actually making contact at the plate.

I dont know what they know that I don't. I know they got a LHRP in AAA with a 2.67 ERA who is 30+ years old. When are they going to call him up, when he's ready to retire?? I agree with wmontanez27, why trade when you have the pieces in house??

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
