Agreed--cant repeat the 11 LOB. And Howard--stop it, you're embarassing. Still, the team finds ways to win. Go Phils!

What a great game by Hamels. Great hitting by Utly, Werth and Shane. THank you Howard for correctly deciding that not running full force through Hamels was a better decision then trying to beat the runner to first. I don't know who forgot to talk to whom, but that could have been devestating if Howard hadn't used his brain. Now, if he'd only use his bat as well.

About the Philly.com sponsored link known as the "Phillies Credit Card:" Check out the interest rate AFTER the introductory APR expires. Then, remember the lessons from the current subprime mortgage mess. The next financial storm will be the credit card debt many households face!

Three more like this and I'll need a new stomach. A couple of RISP hits would have been nice.

Awesome win, and a great ballgame to watch. Must drive in runs tonight. On Hamels, I refer back to my post from the NLCS. He has arrived as a true ace and a star in his own right. Jeff, you're the only person not wearing a Rays hat who thinks that was a 'smart' play. It was a screwup, and it could have really cost us. You're really stretching, to say the least, to commend Howard in that instance. I guess you're looking for the silver lining, but as I always say, let's be real.

Bobby, I think Cole made the mistake on that play! He didn't go over to cover 1st. Could've been lack of communication btw. them. Like the miscommunication btw. Shane and 3rd base coach - I couldn't believe he was going home on a shallow fly to B.J. Upton! The fact he almost made it is a testament to his speed. 'Course, if he had made it, it would've seemed brilliantly daring. Let's hope they've worked out the kinks of being rusty, b/c we can't count on such stellar pitching every night, and the Rays will be hitting and fielding better as the series goes on. Howard needs to relax at the plate, Rollins needs to find his swing, too, and Pat. I sure hope the good Myers shows up tonight! GO PHILS!

Zo, 2 questions for you b/c thru tv it isnt the same as being there 1) it didnt seem to be that loud (thru tv), so how loud did it get in there? 2) it looked like there a lot of empty seats. were there a lot or were people just in any standing room sections the stadium might have? just wondering. Great win, go phils.

Bobby: they misplaced my previous response to you it seems. I am not claiming the play wasnt a botched play. It seemed as if Howard thought he was covering and Hamels thought he was covering. Instead they both got to the bag together. What I mean is that once the miscommunication happened, it was smart of Howrad to concede the hit and slow down (as he obviously did) and not run or slide through hamels and risk hurting the team's best pitcher.

On that Howard-Hamels play, they both made mistakes. It was an in between hop and Howard read it wrong and took a step backwards and the ball almost ate him. You are told to always come forward on a groundball to avoid the bad hop. Second, Hamels was late covering. If you see the replay, Howard tried to toss the ball to him but it was a little late. They also underestimated the speed of the runner. On that Victorino play, don't they have a scouting report on Upton? He had 16 assists this year and the ball was behind second base, practically. Anyway, enough negatives, we won and that's the bottom line. I had a feeling Charlie was going to start Dobbs at third today and DH Stairs, but with the game Felix had yesterday, I don't think is going to happen. Dobbs is the DH today.

timm2, I think there where as many Phillies fans as Rays fans. Those cowbells got it go. They better not come here with them. if they will show at all.

Great win last night considering the Phils play a "B" game. TOO many RISP not crossing the plate. Nice to see Feliz have a good night, but wish he could've crossed the plate once or twice. Hamels AWESOME! Utley FANTASTIC! Madson & Lidge AMAZING! Please Rollins & Howards don't swing a such junky pitches! GO PHILS!!

el zorro, did you see the when the tv camera picked up a phils fan using one of those stupid cowbells. some one needs to explain to that guy that he should never even be holding that thing let alone using it.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
