Phillies will consider Pedro Martinez
Andy Martino
The Phillies have decided to scout free agent pitcher Pedro Martinez, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. It is not clear exactly where or when they will take a look at Martinez, but indications are it could be in the Dominican Republic today, with other teams also watching. The pitching-starved Phils, who were not previously interested in the veteran, have changed their mind and decided to consider him, though that does not mean they will ultimately sign him.
Martinez, 37, is 214-99 with a 2.91 earned run average in 17 seasons, and last pitched for the Mets. Last year, he was 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA for New York.
While past his prime, Martinez is, of course, one of the top pitchers of his era. The Phillies have explored trades for starting pitchers for most of the season and intensified their efforts after Brett Myers was likely lost for the season with a hip injury. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has not yet found a trade partner, and will now consider Martinez.

Promote from within (see Noles, Bystrom and Walk in 1980). It could work again. 2Parm- The Mets did not sign Pedro and are not in a hurry to sign him maybe because: first his asking price was high, second they went after their other FA Oliver Perez and Derek Lowe. They already had Santana, John Maine and Pelfrey. They're not in a panic mode yet becasue they will get 3 of their best four players back in Beltran, Reyes and Delgado soon, plus Putz and Billy Wagner and they are still very much in contention. They could be one of the team following Pedro closely the last couple of weeks. EL Zorro
Wherever Pedro ends up, you can count on Fox to cut into whatever game they are showing to cover his first pitch....lets hope they aren't cutting into a Phils game... dirttracker
If Don Zimmer was a Mets coach I would say yes. BobbyD
good lord, why not try and get Gaylord Perry while you're at it??...I hear he has some gas left in the tank..... craigaroo74
Comment removed.- He's only good for 5 innings. We don't need more burden on the bullpen.
Prospects for Cain... Philly Fan in Kuwait
Reuben learned well from his lessons at the feet of his former masters. This is a classic Phillies move because it satisfies two of their main criteria: 1. He was good once. 2. He's cheap. On the flip side, he is 9 years younger than Jamie Moyer so there's a plus. Probably throws just as hard too. Dave34- Oh yeah, San Francisco is going to trade Cain, after R. Johnson hurt his left shoulder yesterday. EL Zorro
why not? we need another pitcher and why risk messing up a young prospect by throwing them in to the big leagues too early (gavin floyd). sign pedro and hope that he can pitch better than adam eaton and if he can you keep him if not release or trade him. ConservativePatriot22
Here's some stats to chew on while thinking of why we dont' need Pedro. These are our SP prospects. Forget the w-l, but look at IP and bb/k. These guys are pitching into the 7th and have very good control it seems. I'm sure one or more of them can pitch as well as Pedro can right now, will cost less, and help next year as well. (note I didnt include Bastardo as he's bounced around so much and been both SP and RP that his stats are not relevent) AAA prospects Kendrick: 5-5, 3.46 era, 96.1 ip, 29/47 BB/K, 1.26 WHIP Lehr: 11-3, 3.43 era, 94.1 ip, 23/46 BB/K, 1.13 WHIP Carpenter: 7-2, 3.06 era, 94 IP, 29/67 BB/K, 1.29 WHIP Carrasco: 5-7, 4.70 era, 92 IP, 27/88 BB/K, 1.37 WHIP Carrasco (last 4 starts) 4-0, 25.2 IP, 8/21 BB/K, Lopez: 5-4, 3.91 era, 71.1 ip, 13/52 BB/K, 1.35 WHIP AA prospects Worley: 5-5, 3.59 ERA, 95.1 IP, 31/62 BB/K, 1.19 WHIP Savery: 11-1, 3.34 era, 91.2 ip, 41/62 BB/K, 1.32 WHIP Drabek: 5-0, 2.72 era, 39.2 IP, 16/30 BB/K, 1.29 WHIP (incl. 1 game in relief) Low Level prospects Yohan Flande: 7-1, 2.52 era, 82 ip, 24/67 BB/K, 1.17 WHIP Michael Cisco: 5-1 2.60 era, 52 ip, 11/37 BB/K, 1.10 WHIP Drew Naylor: 5-6 4.11 era, 87.2 ip, 20/64 BB/K, 1.27 WHIP Tyler Cloyd 7-3, 3.05 era, 88.2 ip, 19/77 BB/K, 1.23 WHIP Jason Knapp: 2-6 3.50 era, 79.2 ip, 35/106 BB/K, 1.13 WHIP fan_in_jerusalem

Why the heck not? He is not a bad guy, he was sucha great pitcher, that he is the type to runoff a streak of 10 wins, enough to get the Phils over the hump. LGbalsac
i will take him for the no 5 spot since he only cost money and no prospects. Wayne from West Chester
