Phillies will consider Pedro Martinez

The Phillies have decided to scout free agent pitcher Pedro Martinez, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. It is not clear exactly where or when they will take a look at Martinez, but indications are it could be in the Dominican Republic today, with other teams also watching. The pitching-starved Phils, who were not previously interested in the veteran, have changed their mind and decided to consider him, though that does not mean they will ultimately sign him.
Martinez, 37, is 214-99 with a 2.91 earned run average in 17 seasons, and last pitched for the Mets. Last year, he was 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA for New York.
While past his prime, Martinez is, of course, one of the top pitchers of his era. The Phillies have explored trades for starting pitchers for most of the season and intensified their efforts after Brett Myers was likely lost for the season with a hip injury. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has not yet found a trade partner, and will now consider Martinez.

- Pedro, you occupy a unique Statistical perch. I know of no other pitcher, certainly none who pitched after World War Two, who finished their career with over 200 wins and less than 100 losses. (Martinez is 214-99). with thatrecord plus about 3100 strikeouts,you won't have long to wait before you get that call from Cooperstown. My advice is to stay retired.— Dennis O.
- To me it is a good move. Martinez wants big money but as the season apporaches the midway point his demands are more easily met. I would rather go with Pedro if he has anything left in the tank than trade Taylor or Marson for someones No. 5 rental who never had much in the tank in the first place.— Dull

- For the right price, they should consider him. Why not? I rather take a chance on him than send prospects for a pitcher who may give you the same results. He has big time experience. I take 75 to 80 percent of the old Pedro that whatever is out there now. Nobody else available as of now. And the price for one of the pitchers mentioned as available (Marquis) went up big time by being picked for the All Star Game.— EL Zorro

- Zorro, I'm surprised at you. Surely you realize that any of our AAA prospects (and probably some of our AA ones as well) can pitch as well as Pedro can now. Why bring him in and not give the kids a chance? Afterall, he's not going to help the team in the future and these kids might.— fan_in_jerusalem
- Forget about the Cuban kid Aroldis Chapman. He is a head case and may be a few years from making the Majors. We already have a nice flame thrower Jason Knapp, who is 19 years old and is under contract. The Cuban kid is going to cost from $35 to $50 millions.— EL Zorro
- I would have taken him over Chen Ho this winter but his price was too steep. If you can get him cheap (minor league salary plus incentives) then do it. It he works you don't have to trade prospects or bring them up too soon. If he doesn't work out no big deal. I'd take a chance on Glavine too.— towman
