Phillies sign Wilkerson to minor-league deal

POSTED: Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 3:01 PM

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Phillies have signed first baseman/outfielder Brad Wilkerson to a minor-league deal without an invitation to spring training.

Wilkerson, who last played in the majors for Seattle and Toronto in 2008. He played just two games for Boston's triple-A team in 2009.

Wilkerson, 32, will go to minor-league camp for the Phillies. He's one of the last former Expos still floating around in the majors. In eight seasons, he has hit .247 with 122 career home runs. In 2002, he was runner-up for the National League Rookie of the Year voting.

Cody Ransom is a good right-handed hitter. Trouble is, he might not accept a minor league assignment. Maybe when they see how much better he is than Castro he'll make the team. Oh, but that would make sense, never mind.

Wilkerson disappointed the Expos with his distressing proclivity for the K. It's true he hurt the Phillies, but he didn't do much against the rest of the league. I don't see how a strikeout-prone left-handed batter helps the Phils at all.

The Phillies are becoming a museum of old players.

I used to love Wilkerson, although he has been a dude in recent years. Doesn't seem like a bad guy to have in AAA in case you need a veteran for a few weeks in the summer to ride your bench. Can't hurt.

Wilkerson and Mitts were engaged when they were both at the University of Florida.

Wilkerson was engaged to Heather Mitts when they were both at University of Florida. Couldn't hurt his chances, right?

Love the Cliff Lee comment! Yeah, Wilkerson was a real pest, but I'm not sure what this signing will do.

LOL--The "Lee" comment is classic! No matter what the subject is with the Phillies, Cliff Lee still lives--awesome!!

It wouldn't be a proper blog comment section unless someone said "Cliff Lee".

Another lefthander hitter? Conlin is right, Amaro collects LH hitter the same way Tiger collects pancake waitresses.

The fact that he was a Phillies killer with the Expos tells you the impact of this signing. It's either for organizational depth or just doing him a favor to showcase his comeback attempt.

Man he used to kill the Phillies, didn't he hit for the cycle a few times vs. us?
