Phillies sign Oscar Villarreal to minor-league deal

POSTED: Thursday, February 4, 2010, 12:30 PM

The Phillies signed reliever Oscar Villarreal to a minor-league deal on Thursday. Villarreal, who missed the entire 2009 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, will not be invited to spring training.

Villarreal, 28, last pitched in 2008 with Houston when he appeared in 35 games, compiling a 1-3 record with a 5.02 ERA. He was 9-1 with a 3.61 ERA in 58 games for Atlanta in 2006.

The deal was first reported by Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse.

Villarreal, much like the other recent signees by the Phillies, is probably ticketed for triple-A Lehigh Valley. In the last few days, the Phillies have also signed outfielder Freddy Guzman, second baseman Luis Maza and pitchers Brian Gordon and Brian Mazone.

The Phillies also signed catcher John Purdom from the Camden Riversharks.

Taking a page from stan the man's Biblical dream sequence: and then there was a Chan Ho an offspring from the Clan of Park...one who could do wondrous things in the Castle of Long Relief...but alas he aspired to greater glories...he desparately wanted to find his way to the Kingdom of Start...but after many false starts at achieving this dream he envisioned his destiny and returned to do battle in the fields of Long Relief and it came to pass that he became a God to many, especially the people far beyond the sea...and they thus did cheer and celebrate and revel by eating from the magical tree known as "The Tree Kim Chee"...wheeee!!!

It seems that Mr. Park, Chung Ho is having second thought about not accepting the Phillies $3m offer. I would offer $.5 million over lat year salary, just so he will not lose face.

Moses of Emanual and his tribe had wandered for years in the desert. It came to pass that a prophet arose who was called by the name James the Soothsayer. He amazed the tribe with his vision that they would soon pass on to the Promised Land as the chosen ones. And so this too came to pass and Moses led his followers south through a raging sea of red. Upon reaching the Promised Land, he stood before them holding aloft a wondrous idol of gold for all the world to see signifying their great victory and throughout the land the people celebrated and were filled with great joy. And so from that day Moses Followers would forever be known by the new name of World Follower Celebrants as proclaimed by The Prophet of Utley.. And the people shouted out that they would now be joyous through eternity and would never again doubt the voices from on high.

Smart move. It's a numbers game. Most of the guys with Tommy John surgery never make it back. But the technique is getting better and some of them do. If only one of these guys makes it back to the show we're a big winner. Doesn't cost much money and doesn't cost any prospects. All upside and very little downside. Plus, if one of the guys becomes an all star we can trade him to Seattle for Cliff Lee (LOL). And then we can all stop hearing about why we should have kept Cliff Lee.

"I thought we restocked the minors with the Cliff Lee trade..." Prospects generally don't play much at the AAA level. If they are good enough, they advance pretty quickly after leaving Double AA. Triple AA is generally full of older, fringe guys who've never been able to stick anywhere. That's where you keep guys who are possible emergency call-ups if someone will be out for a week or two. Or perhaps you thought that the Phillies acquired the Mariners' entire AAA roster for Cliff Lee.

Smel4727 - pretty sure they didn't sign "catcher John Purdam" for his ERA and WHIP. Unless the article is wrong, (which apparently happened earlier in this same article). And for the record, everyone has Tommy john surgery now. It's super hip. Plus prospect high school pitchers pitch way too much now, IMO.

Our new receptionist is only 24, probably with a big upside--maybe the Phillies can sign her--only if she has a history of carpal tunnel, of course
