Source: Schneider deal worth just under $3 million

POSTED: Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 12:15 PM

Do you like the addition of Brian Schneider?
Yes
No

The Phillies have signed catcher Brian Schneider to a two-year contract to back up Carlos Ruiz, the team announced today.

The contract is worth just under $3 million, with no option  for a third year, a source told the Inquirer.

Schneider, 33, has, is a 10-year MLB veteran with the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals and New York Mets. He has a .251 career batting average, with 59 home runs and 356 RBIs.

The catcher attended Northampton Area High School, and still owns property in Allentown.

“We feel Brian is ideal for our ballclub,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr said in a statement.  “He has played in the NL East for this entire decade, so he knows the opposing hitters in this division well and he has also proven he can handle the bat.  He’s a guy that we would feel comfortable with playing for an extended period of time, if needed.”

Schneider's agent, Brodie Van Wagenen, said that he was engaged in serious discussions with seven teams regarding Schneider, three of which were interested in making him their starting catcher (he declined to name the teams).

"Brian had several exciting opportunities," Van Wagenen said.  "But the opportunity to win for the first time in his career, and to do it so close to where he grew up, turned out to be the deciding factor."

Don't get the parade setup just yet. Scneider is coming off an awful year with the Mets. .218 with a .292 OBP. Makes $4 mill a year also.

I doubt any Phillies fan would have a problem with this signing. He kills us with his bat but more so his game calling. Every time he played against us, whoever the pitcher was he dominated our lineup and made Howard, Utley, and JRoll look foolish. I'm more interested in how he works with our staff. Thumbs up Rubin!!

snakeman: It's easy to have an awful season when you are playing on an awful team! He'll do well over here my friend!

Why is everyone in love with this signing? He is horrible defensively. Look back at the last two years he was behind the plate and the Mutts Played the Phils. Rollins and Victorino were able to walk to second on steals because his arm is HORRIBLE! But in offensive respect he is a definite upgrade over Bako.

Great signing. Definite upgrade over Coste/Hoover. I think he can/has also played first base. If so, can spell Howard once in a while.

I really like this move.... joeolive, kendall as your backup? I guess you could convince him to be a backup after a fifth of whiskey! Good luck with that. Schneider signing is nice little move here.
