The Phillies have signed catcher Brian Schneider to a two-year contract to back up Carlos Ruiz, the team announced today.
The contract is worth just under $3 million, with no option for a third year, a source told the Inquirer.
Schneider's agent, Brodie Van Wagenen, said that he was engaged in serious discussions with seven teams regarding Schneider, three of which were interested in making him their starting catcher (he declined to name the teams).
"Brian had several exciting opportunities," Van Wagenen said. "But the opportunity to win for the first time in his career, and to do it so close to where he grew up, turned out to be the deciding factor."

Well, he certainly knows the NL East. celtic_13- Excellent pick up!
I've always been a big Schneider fan. He'll make a nice addition to the team in the backup role. If he can stay healthy, he's a very solid defensive catcher. Now, if only we would trade for Halladay to throw to him. Welcome to Philly, Brian! veritas1325
Hopefully this propels the mediocre Phillies to the next level... i can see that long ellusive trip to the World Series in our grasp! CrayzeeGuy- The PERFECT signing...great job again by Ruben!! beagle29
- Very smart signing
This guy has always killed us with his bat. It will be nice to see him in our uniform for a change. Nice Job!!! Philly Phanatic
No blockbuster, but a solid pickup. Brian is from just down the road from me, and I've heard a lot of good things about him from the people that know him. I'm kinda surprised he passed up more obvious starting options to come here but it is nice to have him as a backup. Plus it takes pressure off Ruiz which should help over 162 games. MattPSU- who?
Enjoy his month-long stints on the DL, and hope he and Ruiz don't get hurt at the same time!! dphiegirl- I wonder if they even contacted Jason Kendall to see what he was interested in signing with a WS contender and how much he wanted....... Don't get me wrong, not a bad signing..... just curious..... joeolive
love this move. bobbyd24
They better not being paying him anywhere CLOSE to the $4.9M he made each of the last two seasons. Stuie
