About 25 minutes after speaking with Ruben Amaro Jr. and Charlie Manuel, Geoff Jenkins talked to reporters about his release.  Sitting on a picnic table behind the Phillies clubhouse, Jenkins was composed after the Phillies decided to eat the $8 million left on his contract.

Wow. Guess they're going to make a move to get a RH bat.

I didn't expect them to release him, but I was sure Stairs was the guy they wanted to keep. Jenks is simply not suited to a part-time, PH role. He stinks at it. Stairs, meanwhile, has made a very respectable career out of it. Plus, now that they have Ibanez in LF, if Werth were to go down, it is unlikely they would simply slide on of those two into RF every day until Weth got back...this tells me that Mayberry is option #1 to replace Werth should he get hurt for an extended period of time. Now let's see who they get to hit from the right side, or if it is just Miguel Cario.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
