Phillies claim Figueroa off waivers

POSTED: Wednesday, April 7, 2010, 2:02 PM

WASHINGTON -- The Phillies have claimed righthanded pitcher Nelson Figueroa off waivers from the Mets, a team official confirmed.

Figueroa, 35, was one of four players the Phillies received from the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Curt Schilling trade on July 26, 2000. (Trivia question without looking it up: Who is the only other active player from that trade 10 years ago?) He pitched in 19 games for the Phillies in 2001 before being released.

Last season with the Mets, Figueroa appeared in 16 games and started 10. He was 3-8 with a 4.09 ERA. He was out of the majors for three seasons before joining the Mets in 2008. This spring, he lost out on the battle for the final spot in the Mets' bullpen before being designated for assignment.

As a reliever in 2009, Figueroa had a 3.65 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. He will join the Phillies as a long man in the bullpen and also provide some starting pitching insurance -- an area the Phillies desperately need right now. The move likely means Andrew Carpenter will go back to triple A.

The Phillies now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.

More to come...

Adding Depth like Scheider and Figueroa is not a bad move jeltz. It's not like there starting or an integral part of the team just a solid move to make minor adjustments to improve.

Apparently he had a really good Spring except for one outing, but it looks like $$ kept him from cracking the Mets overpaid rotation/bullpen.

The Nationals must seem like ants on an ant hill looking up at a kid armed with a magnifying glass on a sunny day. They have no conceivable chance tonight.

What is Travis Lee doing these days? I am surprised Ed Wade hasn't signed him in Houston yet. We got hosed in the Schilling trade...at least I vividly remember moments from Von Hayes and Juan Samuel.

As a NY Yanks/Mets fan, you can have the former Mets pitcher and also catcher. Keep signing these losers from the Mets. just makes the Mets better and Your Phillies more Losers! Remember who won the World Series in 2009 FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
