WASHINGTON -- The Phillies have claimed righthanded pitcher Nelson Figueroa off waivers from the Mets, a team official confirmed.

Figueroa, 35, was one of four players the Phillies received from the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Curt Schilling trade on July 26, 2000. (Trivia question without looking it up: Who is the only other active player from that trade 10 years ago?) He pitched in 19 games for the Phillies in 2001 before being released.

Last season with the Mets, Figueroa appeared in 16 games and started 10. He was 3-8 with a 4.09 ERA. He was out of the majors for three seasons before joining the Mets in 2008. This spring, he lost out on the battle for the final spot in the Mets' bullpen before being designated for assignment.

As a reliever in 2009, Figueroa had a 3.65 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. He will join the Phillies as a long man in the bullpen and also provide some starting pitching insurance -- an area the Phillies desperately need right now. The move likely means Andrew Carpenter will go back to triple A.
