One the heels of a shutout loss, the Phillies have begun a major shakeup, summoning catcher Paul Hoover from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.  Okay, it's not a major shake-up.  It's a September callup of a 33-year-old veteran who batted .253 with 1 home run in 73 games this season.  Just a routine move to add a third catcher for a month. But hey, it's news.

Hoover is not yet listed on the 40-man roster at phillies.com. I'm not sure if they can move John Ennis to the 60-day DL at this time, but that would be the easy way to clear a spot on the 40. Pitcher Joe Bisenius, who came north with the Phils in 2007 but has been mostly injured or ineffective in the minors since then, might be another target.

Didn't they take Brad Harmon off of the 40-man roster a day or two ago?

I was going to ask the same question goodgirlddady. They have the other catcher on the 40-man roster. Maybe Hoover replaced him. I would not replace Ennis with Hoover, because you may need his spot to put a any player not in the roster now in the playoff roster. Harmon was dropped from the roster in favor of Ennis.

Ennis replaced Harmon on the 40-man roster. They have not yet announced who was removed from the roster to make room for Hoover.

In this day and age, HOOVER isn't a popular word.

This blog is been particularly uninteresting and bland all year. We either get dour observations, tidbits on random minor league player shifts, or nothing at all. I hope the postseason offers more.

See that 40 man roster guys, Naylor and Naughton plus Tim Kennelly, who is the best of the Aussie Phils, and Brad Harman are listed on the Aussie roster to play in Prague next week in the World Baseball Cup Seems like most of the Phils Farm system is in Europe right now. That's our visionary Front Office playing locally thinking globally.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
