Phillies acquire lefty Taschner

Funny, Rich Dubee was just telling me this morning that he wanted another lefty. More on that in the paper tomorrow, and more on this: the Phillies traded C Ronny Paulino to the San Francisco Giants for LHP Jack Taschner Friday night. Last season, Taschner, 30, was 3-2 with a 4.88 earned run average. In 48 innings of relief, he struck out 39 batters and walked 24. In 178 games over four seasons with the Giants, Taschner’s ERA is 5.01.

This move adds a lefty to replace J.C. Romero for 50 games and keep Scott Eyre company, and it confirms that Chris Coste will be the backup catcher, though we knew that already.
A few facts that raise questions: During Taschner’s career, lefthanded batters have hit .288 against him, while righties have batted .247. In 8 2/3 innings this spring, Taschner has allowed 10 hits and 12 walks, striking out eight. In ten innings this spring, he has posted a 6.23 ERA.
