Could the Phillies trade for Matt Holliday? It's possible, but the asking price seems too high.

If the Phillies don’t bring back leftfielder Pat Burrell, they will need somebody to fill his spot in the lineup.

How about Matt Holliday?

The Phillies talked with the Colorado Rockies about Holliday (and lefthander Brian Fuentes) before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but the asking price was too high. The Phillies still have interest in Holliday, and for good reason. He is a righthanded power bat who would fit into the middle of the Phillies’ lineup nicely. He also plays left field.

SI.com reported yesterday that the Phillies are one of the most aggressive pursuers for Holliday. But a couple baseball sources doused such talk. One of them said last night the Rockies likely would require Shane Victorino or Jayson Werth, plus at least a couple top prospects – start with righthander Carlos Carrasco and work down (think J.A. Happ and/or Antonio Bastardo) – to get serious with the Rockies.

Would the Phillies want to ship a big-league talent like Victorino plus top prospects like Carrasco and others for a player that would be with the Phillies just one season? Holliday will be a free agent and his agent is Scott Boras. Boras always has his players test the free-agent market, so there would be little to no chance the Phillies could extend him past 2009.

The feeling I get is that the Phillies are interested, but the asking price needs to drop a lot to be a fit. Do the Phillies have the pieces to make it happen, as SI.com suggests? Yes, they do. They definitely have some minor-league talent that other teams covet. But they also don't feel the need to cripple their farm system to make it happen.

*

The Phillies have seen Japanese righthander Junichi Tazawa, but haven't made an offer. Yet.

*

Ruben Amaro Jr. just completed his first GM meetings. He liked the experience. John Gonzalez, Bob Ford and Phil Sheridan talk about Curt Schilling and his desire to pitch again for the Phillies.

The Denver Post offers its take on Holliday to Phillies possibilities.

Living in Wyoming, I see Holliday regularly. He's a horse, no doubt. But that horse is ridden by Scott Boras. And that jockey doesn't start the race until AFTER he crosses the finish line (i.e., end of contract). Holliday will test the FA waters after '09 and we'll be out a substantial everyday player and two or three top notch prospects for a one year rental. Why? Is the only way Amaro can find an outfielder by raping the Phillies' farm system???? Perhaps we need a new GM already, too!

Phillies need to lock up Howard and Hamels to long-term contracts. Acquire a platoon-type LF and keep this nucleus together. Holliday will be in New York or Boston in 2010.

If the phils trade Victorino, and I don't care who they get in return, they deserve another 28 year wait for a world series ring. FIrst of all he is a perfect Phila player, tough, big mouthed, aresive and a winner. Second, trading one starting outfielder to aquire another doeasn't solve any problems. So Holiday replaces Pat, who replaces Shane?? What a stupid idea!!

Jeff, agreed.....if they can get Holliday without giving up any regulars from this years' team AND get him to agree to a 3 year contract extension ahead of time, so his impending FA is put off, then it's a deal...anything else is a big waste of time. I'd just as soon ride a mule with a barbed wire saddle in front of millions of people in the Kentucky Derby than have a client of Boras on my team.....

"Perhaps we need a new GM already, too!"...This is great. The Phillies won the World Series last week and the new general manager hasn't been in power long enough to make one single move and you're calling for him to be fired. I really wish you idiots would contain your inane comments to WIP.

I agree Jeff. Victorino should not be on the block, with this or anything. Thankfully, the article does not say the Phils are shopping him, just that the Rox are interested (and why wouldn't they be?). I love the idea of Holliday as a Phil, and I'm glad the Phils are in the mix, but I wouldn't sacrifice Victorino for anyone. I'd love to see something work out. But then there's Boras looming in one year.

I hope we don't get what you'd expect from a bat boy making the decisions. That's aboput what RA, Jr. is. I'd make a better GM and I have no idea what I'm doing! (I'm already a GM!!!- sorry for the pun) I'd love Pat back next year- if he doesn't want to come back after a Phils offer- then it's on him and his conscience--just go to the AL and enjoy all that money. Put Dobbs in left and develop the minors. I'm glad Ruiz stepped up and might make the Marson (Marsdon- I foget his spelling for the moment) decision easier. Maybe he's trade bait if Ruiz continues to mature and improve. The magic clutch Ruiz showed in post season and the way he handles and is beloved by the pitchers makes him a keeper, right? Get Charlie to spend some time teaching Golson to hit!!!!!!

I, too, agree with Jeff. Bad idea!!! Even trading Werth doesn't make sense, same problem of needing an outfielder to replace him. I'd rather we platoon the players we have than give away 3 players to get 1 who will be around a short time. I think the best bet is to look for a young prospect. Maybe trade Donald for an outfielder prospect. I think Golson is still a year away from being ready for major league. Could the Phils make do for that year? I don't know. Jenkins could have a better year in '09. Just don't trade Vic! Nor Jimmy, as Dave Murphy heard the rumor. You don't win the WS and give away the nucleus. Thanks for your help, boys, goodbye!

Barndog might be right about RA- he's probably watching this [yeah, he's watching this!!!- I meant metamorphically]and laughing about the widespread panic he can cause by anything he says. This year everything worked out but there's been a history of trading the farm for a 1-year rental so some of the panic is well understood.

It sounds like the Phillies aren't as aggressive pursuers as SI.com has suggested. Unless the asking price drops -- a lot -- I don't think Matt Holliday is coming here.

All good points. Amaro is nuts to give up werth or victorino who are proven champs to get Holliday who will be with us for 1 yr and then instead of being down onw out fielder we are down 2 or 3. Dont touch Carrasco either since he will be at least a #2 starter.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
