It's definitely nice to be talking about the Phils fighting for 1st place at this stage rather than being 5 games back and figuring out what's wrong, like say, the NY Mutts. And very cool that Chase Utley is leading all NL player sin All-Star voting. The only thing that scares me now is the fact that we have our #5 pitcher starting tomorrow night against the Marlins. Let's hope our offense keeps putting up the numbers. Go Phils!

First off, thank you to the Phils for playing good baseball (even if it was against a depleted Rockies team), as a fan, I appreciate the effort. Playing consistent, high-level baseball is the mark of a truly good team and hopefully the Phillies are beginning to be that team. Just an observation from last night's telecast. Phils' announcers were talking about the Mets and the problems they continue to have. They mentioned that benching players is usually a very good way to get the attention of underperforming players, such as Carlos Delgado, who is batting .215. I get it and I agree. However, it would be nice if the announcers were a bit more objective about there own team. Certainly when Ryan Howard was batting .180 he was a good candidate to be benched a few games but I don't remember announcers discussing this at the time. I'm glad Ryan is beginning to come out of it and I understand he has been more productive than Delgado, but it would be nice if the announcers would show some professional objectivity once in a while and say things as they really are. To simply say a player is "scuffling" is not very in-depth analysis.

MrPhillie, I hear you on the benching thing, but I think there's a disticntion between benching a guy who's underperforming to "get his attention" and fixing what's wrong with a player of Howard's status who was so clearly going through some sort of psychological meltdown. I don't think anyone believes Howard's 'slump' was due to lack of motivation or bad attitude. And I'm not saying that sitting him down wasn't warranted. In fact, Charlie did that for a couple of games (only to PH Howard in the same games) to try and clear the slate for him. As for the announcers, I can't cite a specific example, but I seem to recall them discussing what to do about Howard, and at least mentioning the option of sitting him out a few games. If Howard was showing signs of not putting out the effort or not caring about his performance, I think you would have heard stronger statements, at least from some of them. Still, you have to remember, these guys are employees of the Phillies. They're always gonna be more sympathetic to Ryan Howard than they are to Carlos Delgado.

LOVED the two outs at the plate! As well as Chase & Geoff's HR's. LOL! I know there's a lot a talk about all the Rockies on the DL, but truthfully, I don't think it would have helped. Atkins is their best hitter and I'm pretty sure he was held to one hit in each of the two games he started. I was at Mon. and Wed. games. Great to see the 20 run rout AND the sweep! Their pitching was nothing to write home about. Starters and relief.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover
Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.
This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
