Inquirer staff writer Jim Salisbury reports:
The Phillies and righthanded reliever Ryan Madson have reached agreement on a three-year contract extension, The Inquirer learned today. The deal, which is pending a physical exam, is believed to be for $12 million, with incentives.
Madson, 28, was 4-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 76 games in 2008.
Madson had been eligible for salary arbitration. The Phils have five salary arbitration-eligible players remaining: Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Shane Victorino, Chad Durbin and Joe Blanton.
Potential salary figures will be exchanged tomorrow.

In other news, despite his 50-game suspension to start the 2009 season, J.C. Romero is eligible to compete for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. Provisional rosters for the WBC will be announced at 7 tonight.

MLB announced its rosters for the World Baseball Classic. Phillies on rosters include:

Canada: outfielder Matt Stairs.
Dominican Republic: catcher Ronny Paulino.
Italy: outfielder Michael Spidale.
Mexico: infielder Oscar Robles.
Netherleands: righthander Mike Bolsenbroek.
Panama: catcher Carlos Ruiz.
Puerto Rico: lefthander J.C. Romero.
USA: shortstop Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino.
Venezuela: righthander Carlos Carrasco.
Nice. I was convinced that, other than Ryan Howard, Madson was the one other guy who was without a doubt going to a hearing. Apparently the Phillies can work with Boras after all. RollinsWasRight
I was worried about Madson when I heard that he signed up with Boras. I was pretty sure that he was headed to the Yankees or Red Sox. This news kind of lifts my spirits a bit after yesterday's loss... roque32
I'll be honest, I think that's a lot for Madson. I hope he becomes more consistent. Gary Varsho

Thats not bad given there is no salary cap. bird-dog
How many more years was he eligible for arbitration? 93phils
Good news. I too was worried with Boras as the agent. 3 years for 12 is a fair price for a setup guy. mikemaddog
This is good news, but I think Mad-dog needs to be as consistent in 2009 as he was in Sept/Oct 2008. $4MM per is quite a lot for a RH setup man. Phront_Runner
Remember that string of scoreless innings he had a few years ago(was that his rookie season)? He was brilliant and can be again. Who knows, maybe he can be a closer some day. KINGOFZED
Victorino and Blanton are a must to sign alakazan54
Varsho - I don't think they had a choice. He got so much love from the national media during the playoffs, it drove up his value. $4M per is not bad if he continues to be dominant in the 8th, which he certainly is capable. A mid-90's fastball and a ++ change-up should be a devastating combination for a relief pitcher, and it certainly looked like he finally figured that out down the stretch. I believe that's the organization's perspective. Besides, they and the Rays proved last year, winning is all about the bullpen. The Phillies are trying to maintain a quality late-inning combination to shut the door. Like you said though, with Madson, it is all about consistency. To be fair, though, he has pitched well for the Phillies most of his young career. Even those times when the fans haetd him, his performance was better than he ever got credit for. He seemed for a long time to be one of those players who, for some strange reason, only seems to get noticed when he has a bad game. Hopefully those days are over now ... ... 93Phils - None. This was his last year. If they didn't sign him, he would've been a free agent after the 2009 season. RollinsWasRight
Oh yeah - and after yesterday's reminder of how seasons in this town usually end, I think it appropriate to once again offer thanks to the 2008 Phillies. Already, only 3 months later, sometimes it is too easy to forget just how special October was. And I know it is only going to get harder to remember clearly from here... RollinsWasRight
nice. he is tall, can he cover fitz? timm2
I like this deal especially since his agent was Boras. Almost $11M/year for Hamels and Madson, not bad at all! pdditty
