POSTED: Monday, January 19, 2009, 11:56 AM

Inquirer staff writer Jim Salisbury reports:

The Phillies and righthanded reliever Ryan Madson have reached agreement on a three-year contract extension, The Inquirer learned today. The deal, which is pending a physical exam, is believed to be for $12 million, with incentives.

Madson, 28, was 4-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 76 games in 2008.

Madson had been eligible for salary arbitration. The Phils have five salary arbitration-eligible players remaining: Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Shane Victorino, Chad Durbin and Joe Blanton.

Potential salary figures will be exchanged tomorrow.

In other news, despite his 50-game suspension to start the 2009 season, J.C. Romero is eligible to compete for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. Provisional rosters for the WBC will be announced at 7 tonight.

I agree with Varsho. Still not convinced on Madson over full season. He needs to get his adam's apple under control for the long haul. Hopefully I am wrong.

I agree Jeff G/RWR and others this is another good move for our Fightin Phils. I think Madson is coming into his own and will do fine over the next several years.

mick, agreed that there is some risk. Madson certainly still has to prove more consistency over the long haul to justify $4M/year. But, his final two months also didn't look like a guy who just got "hot", either. It really looked like he finally realized that his change up is his "out" pitch, but that he needs to utilize his pretty impressive fastball, and pitch off of it, in order to maximize his change up's effectiveness. If that is the case, there's no reason he shouldn't be a very good setup man for the life of this contract. And of course, he is a Boras client, so you are going to have to hit your wallet a little harder than you might like in order to keep him. All that being said, I think it is a wise strategy to try to keep a quality bullpen intact. The bigger question mark, IMO, is can Chad Durbin be anywhere near as effective next year? If he can, they should be pretty strong in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings again. If not, we might end up seeing more of Chan Ho Park than we would like.

Interesting note about all the contracts that expire at the end or near 2011. Madson was a very good signing as he has been above average most of the time, and has consistently healthy. Howard really is the big short and medium term problem. His trade value will quickly diminish with each passing July and offseason. No one is going to want to rent him in 2010 or 2011 knowing he will go for huge bucks as FA. God I wish the Phils had the courage to seriously go after Texeira, even for 10 years, and dump the lump that is Howard.

scars - as for a $12M salary, jealous much? I am sorry you weren't born with the physical gifts that would enable you to make the same kind of living. Heck, I'm really, REALLY sorry I wasn't. But you know, economically speaking, the prices you pay are not indicative of what the players make. Quite the opposite actually. The truth is that what the players make is reflective of how much owners can entice you to pay. This offseason's free agent market is blatant evidence of that concept. And no matter what they do for a living, they are the most significant employees of a multi-billion dollar industry; they are entitled to fair compensation. If you feel the players shouldn't make so much money, then it logically follows that you must feel the owners make too much money. If that is the case, your recourse is clear: don't spend any of your money on the product they provide. Otherwise, quit complaining to me. I didn't develop our economic system, nor have I ever negotiated any player's contract, or established any organization's pricing structure. I personally have far less issue with Ryan Madson earning $4M a year to pitch 80 innings than I do with some CEO being ousted from a Fortune 500 company for running it into the ground, costing thousands of people their jobs and costing the stockholders millions, and being paid a $140M severance package on his way out the door. Now THAT is nuts.

bigredmachinefan: Of course teams will want to rent Howard for a year. Just like the DOdgers rented Manny, the Brewers rented CC etc. We may not be able to dump his entire salary when we trade him at the deadline, but we will get back either a legit #1 or 2 starter + a bunch of top prospects. Renting a player is what you do in the middle of a pennant race to fill a void

Jeff, I don't think anyone would compare CC or Manny to Howard. He is likely to be at or near $20 million by the time he hits FA. Time will tell, but generally speaking teams prefer not, except in exceptional cases (or with player who don't make a lot of money) want to rent a short termer. I think his case is much more like Brian Roberts with the O's, then Manny or CC.

RWR, your post at 1:55 PM on 1/20/09...one of the best I've ever read on this blog. I can't understand why people complain about baseball players making millions. The only gripe I'd ever have about the money players make is if it's bad money spent that keep the team from spending else where and getting better (you hear me Adam Eaton!!!). I'm not the biggest Madsen fan in the world, but he played an important role on a team that won the World Series. Truth is he was probably slightly underpaid for what he did last year, so throw the man a bone.

Just heard: Victorino signed a 1 year/ $3.1M deal. Looking back, his numbers crush Rowand's in San Fran while making about %5 of what Aaron got last year. I wouldn't believe it unless I saw it myself: more runs, hits, 3B, HR, SB, Avg, Slg.... We definitely have a steal in the Flyin' Hawaiian
