The Phillies have fired third base coach Steve Smith.

This did not come as a complete surprise. I had heard rumblings that Charlie Manuel wasn't happy with Smith's job performance. Smith was a last-minute hire before the 2007 season after Art Howe abruptly quit to become the bench coach with the Texas Rangers. Smith had been suspended twice for on-field incidents, which had upset Manuel.

This was Manuel's decision, not Amaro's.

Good move, albeit about 2 or 3 years later than it should have been.

Thank you. I would like to see the stats for the number of baserunners sent vs. the number thrown out compared with other 3rd base coaches during the time. He's got to be near the bottom.

Dont break up the core LOL Steve Smith was horrible! Although I must admit, from my softball days, 3rd base coach can be stressful. When to send and when not to, who is on base, how many outs, is the guy fast enough, who is in the outfield....many things go through your head in about 2-3 seconds. Can be very rewarding though when you do your job well....WORLD CHAMPS!!!!!!

Smith wasn`t the best I`ve seen at third but he also wasn`t the worse. He was actually better this year than in the past.

No big deal. The guy was, at best, a below average base coach. I'm sure they'll find a more suitable replacement. They've got much BIGGER problems to address than Steve Smith. Take that to the bank.

Amaro is a pompous clown. I will question every move he makes.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
