Phillies to unveil Harry Kalas statue

The Phillies will unveil the Harry Kalas statue on Aug. 14.

A group of Phillies fans long lobbied for a statue of Harry Kalas to grace Citizens Bank Park, and that dream becomes reality on Aug. 14.

The Phillies will unveil the statue, sculpted by Lawrence J. Nowlan, in a ceremony before that day's Phillies-Nationals game. The team says members of the Kalas family and more than two dozen Phillies alumni will attend.

Here's a press release from the Phillies:

The legend of Harry Kalas will continue to live on at Citizens Bank Park.

A statue dedicated to the memory of Phillies Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas is set to be unveiled on Sunday, August 14 during a special pre-game ceremony at Citizens Bank Park. The event begins at 1:10 p.m., prior to that day’s Phillies-Nationals game.

Among those participating will be Lawrence J. Nowlan, the statue’s sculptor, as well as Todd Palmer and Suzanne Norris from Dear Harry, Inc., the fan-based group organized solely to fund the statue. Accepting on the team’s behalf will be Phillies President David Montgomery.

Special guests will include members of the Kalas family as well as more than two dozen Phillies alumni.

“This will no doubt be an emotional day for the Phillies and we are extremely grateful to the many fans who contributed to this effort,” said Mike Stiles, Phillies Senior Vice President, Administration and Operations. “We look forward to joining everyone on August 14 in honoring our beloved colleague and friend, Harry Kalas.”

“Harry gave all he had to the fans here in Philadelphia,” said Nowlan. “For 38 years he treated us with nothing but love and respect. Being able to play a small part in cementing his legacy in our city and beyond has been a dream come true.”

The 7 ½-foot bronze statue will be located on the Main Concourse behind Section 141, near Harry the K’s restaurant.
