Phillies sign three 16-year-old prospects

MIAMI — The Phillies spent $1.55 million to sign two 16-year-old Venezuelan shortstops on the first day of the international signing period.

Arquimedes Gamboa signed for $900,000 and Daniel Brito signed for $650,000. Both were ranked in Baseball America's top 30 prospects.

Jhon Nunez, a lefthander from Panama, signed for $90,000.

"We like both the shortstops, a lot," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "And we like the lefty a lot, too. We kind of snuck up on the lefthander."

The Phillies' total international bonus pool is $3.2 million, and Amaro expects to spend it all.

"We are working on several other guys right now," Amaro said.
