ST. LOUIS — The Phillies' solution to having three catchers and four outfielders was to recall light-hitting utility infielder Michael Martinez before Wednesday's game.

Catcher Humberto Quintero was designated for assignment to make room. This is Martinez's third stint with the Phillies in 2013. He can play center field, if needed.

Martinez's promotion will allow the Phillies to use Delmon Young as designated hitter this weekend in Detroit. Beyond that, Martinez does not offer much. He is a career .186 hitter with a .506 OPS. He has twice been outrighted off the 40-man roster in the last calendar year.

His .506 OPS is the fifth-worst all-time for a Phillies position player with at least 350 career plate appearances.

Martinez was 4 for his last 27 at triple-A Lehigh Valley.

This is the second time in 2013 the Phillies have designated Quintero. If he clears waivers, he could return to triple A because the organization's catching depth is thin.
