Schwimer called up

The Phillies placed Joe Blanton on the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for righthander Michael Schwimer, who takes Placido Polanco's spot on the roster.

Polanco (sports hernia) was placed on the 15-day disabled list following Tuesday's game. The move is retroactive to Aug. 7, meaning Polanco can be activated Monday.

For now, the Phillies return to 12 pitchers. Schwimer, 25, is 9-1 with 10 saves and a 1.88 ERA in 46 appearances for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He had 86 strikeouts in 67 innings, an average of 11.55 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, and held opponents to a .202 batting average. Schwimer was picked for the International League All-Star team this summer.

Blanton has been out most of the season with elbow problems. He has resumed long tossing and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said he hopes the righthander can return sometime in September.

Interested to see what Schwimer can do, but I don''t know what they will do for long relief if they need it. With KK now in the rotation, and Worley looking like a rookie his last start, the bullpen may now need to supply some innings other than the 8th and 9th.

Interesting move, adding a high strikeout option to the bullpen is a big plus. Don't see walks/9 here, if he can throw strikes sounds like a good addition, better than say Carpenter.

blaqjaq, Herndon will be the long man if needed, not a new role for him.

Excited to see this kid get a shot. Big strikeout pitcher out of the bullpen will be a great addition.

This frees up KK to start if Hamels will miss more than one start.
