Phillies claim Michael Mariot off waivers from Royals

Matt Klentak is clearly attempting to capitalize on having top priority on the waiver wire this offseason.

The Phillies' new general manager made his third waiver claim of November on Monday, adding righthanded reliever Michael Mariot, who was recently designated for assignment by the World Series-champion Kansas City Royals.

Mariot, 27, posted a 2.32 ERA over 62 innings of relief last season with the Royals' triple-A Omaha affilliate. He logged only three innings at the major-league level in 2015. Mariot was an eighth-round draft pick in 2010 out of Nebraska, where he was a teammate of the Phillies' Cody Asche.

The addition of Mariot brings the Phillies' 40-man roster to 38. Each of Klentak's three waiver claims have been for relievers. The team earlier this month claimed righthander Dan Otero from the Oakland Athletics and righthander A.J. Achter from the Minnesota Twins.
