Phillies claim Carrera, designate Inciarte
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
ATLANTA — After one game, the Phillies roster has undergone change.
They claimed outfielder Ezequiel Carrera off waivers from Cleveland and designated outfielder Ender Inciarte for assignment Tuesday. The move is a shuffle of fifth outfielders. With a hole in right field and no particularly good answer for at least a month, Carrera could stand to gain playing time.
The 25-year-old Venezuelan led the majors with 11 stolen bases this spring. He has 116 games of major-league experience, all with the Indians, and a career .653 OPS. Of those 116 games, 88 were starts.
Carrera, a lefthanded hitter, was out of options and designated for assignment March 25 by Cleveland. Earlier in the spring, Indians manager Terry Francona said, "His speed impacts the game."
He can play all three outfield positions, with the majority of his time coming in center field. Carrera was originally signed by the New York Mets from Venezuela.
Charlie Manuel started John Mayberry Jr. in right field Monday. He said he has no problem platooning Mayberry and Laynce Nix until Delmon Young's return from ankle surgery. Young was scheduled to play the outfield for three innings in an extended spring training game Tuesday.
But Young's addition to the roster is not imminent and the team is not enamored of Mayberry nor Nix. In an ideal world, one of them swings a hot bat and earns the majority of at-bats. If not, Carrera enters the equation.
Inciarte, 22, did not appear in Monday's season opener. As a Rule 5 pick, the Phillies were required to keep him on the active roster for all of 2013. It was a challenge, considering he had never played a game above single A. The Phillies could have attempted to trade for his rights with Arizona.
If a team claims Inciarte off waivers, they must follow the same Rule 5 stipulations. If he clears waivers, the Diamondbacks recover his rights. The Phillies will receive $25,000 in exchange.
Carrera will be in uniform Wednesday, the Phillies said.
EXTRA BASES. Chase Utley became the 13th second baseman in history with 200 home runs. The others: Jeff Kent, Rogers Hornsby, Craig Biggio, Ryne Sandberg, Joe Morgan, Joe Gordon, Bret Boone, Lou Whitaker, Bobby Grich, Bobby Doerr, Dan Uggla and Roberto Alomar. ... Monday's game achieved the highest opening-day rating on PHL17 in the last 17 years. It averaged an 11.5 household rating and was the No. 1 program in the Philadelphia market. ... Mike Schmidt, George Brett and comedian Joe Piscopo will throw the ceremonial first pitches prior to Friday's home opener at Citizens Bank Park vs. Kansas City.
Have a question? Send it to Matt Gelb's Mailbag.
Yo, welome to the Philly Speedway... rex nemorensis- Yeah I've just about lost faith in this front office.
Last nights game was the most watched season opener in 17 years. Nearly 400,000 households tuned in(It wll take SD about 40 games to get to 400,000 TV viewers) the fans want to support the Phillies but Rube,Proefrock and the Gang are making it so hard.
I just cant believe with the support the fanbase has given the Phils in the past 5-6 years that ownership couldn't demand a better outfield, an outfield that could compete in the very tough NL East.
argonne - Enough with Mayberry already.
Shocker that Inciarte is gone ... Just a couple days ago, he was being mentioned as a bright spot for Phillies future ... LOL
Copper34- Trade Mayberry & Nix. thomdee
- And you would expect to get...?
JBP - A bag of donuts.
Professor1982 - Would you really ask for that much? Donuts went up in price.
justacarpenter - They better be Krispy Kreme.

Interesting. Another Left-handed hitting OFer, as is Brown, as is Nix. Can play CF, where only Mayberry is the back-up. Does not play 1B, where Nix can, and Mayberry also can.
Delmon Young actually playing the OF in a game in Clearwater today... Is he ahead of schedule?
Does this mean something for Nix? Does this mean something for Mayberry? ExiledinFla

Basically he's Inciarte in a few years. Still young, still fast, great D, improving at the plate, what's not to like? tripleplay83- Reality Check- he was not good enough for the Cleveland Indians...case closed.

what does it say about this season and where this team stacks up with the rest of the league that the GM was willing to do this that quick with Inciarte and never did it at all with standouts such as Michael Martinez or David Herndon?
To think that Martinez parlayed his Rule 5 selection into not one but two seasons with the big club, and despite hitting an amazing .100 for most of the season in 2012, remains in contention to find his way to the ML again in 2013.
What drives the Twin Pillars of Stupidity, Amaro and Manuel, to make decisions such as that? Is it simply because they like him, like the kind of kid he is, like his smile? Can it be anything else? advantasux- Martinez was an infield backup, genius. There wasn't much else available, with Utley out. No one expected Martinez to take over a position.
mike l - "no one expected Martinez to take over a position". What a funny thing to write on behalf of your hero Amaro. Whether it was "expected" or not, there he was, starting in Chase's place for weeks until Chase's return and then, when most of us figured we had seen the last of him, he returned and started once or twice per week from that point forward.
This was all in 2012, of course. 2011 is the season where the GM looked in every direction possible for roster moves but never found the cause (or the smarts) to dismiss his little boy from the team.
And, @Mike I, how pathetic you must be to find my post to be offensive to the point where you're mounting a defense on behalf of a true little leaguer, Michael Martinez, and the team's little league GM, Ruben Amaro. Dude, get a life!
advantasux
Except for the comment by tripleplay83, you guys are really panicked over a nothing move. This guy is a stop-gap 5th outfielder until D. Young is healthy. We're not talking about moving Utley or Howrad or Rollins. Just give it a rest. This is season is one game old and it will play out the way it will play out. Nothng more, nothing less. Let's have fun and enjoy the ride. mike 1717
More from the 2009 ranking:
Ranked Seattle Mariners #15 prospect after the 2009 season
Carrera stood in the shadow of the other two minor leaguers acquired from the Mets in the December 2008 trade of J.J. Putz, but the slight center fielder passed Maikel Cleto and Mike Carp by winning the Southern League's batting (.337) and on-base percentage (.441) titles in 2009. In fact, his OBP ranked third in the minors. While in the Mets system, he revered fellow Venezuelan Endy Chavez, whose game Carrera emulates. He excels as a defensive outfielder because of his first-step quickness and proper angles to the ball. He doesn't throw well, but he improved his release time and accuracy in 2009. An above-average runner, Carrera is adept at bunting for hits, stretching singles into doubles and stealing bases late in games. The definition of a pesky hitter, he can outlast pitchers for walks by fouling off even quality offerings. He offers little power, and none against lefthanders, against whom he still looks uncomfortable. He also doesn't read lefties well on stolen-base attempts, and his success rate fell from 81 percent versus righthanders to 43 percent against southpaws. He spent time on the disabled list with a high ankle sprain and sprained thumb last year, both sustained while chasing down balls in the outfield. Farm director Pedro Grifol describes Carrera as having a compact game, excelling in all aspects of small ball. It's difficult to see him supplanting any of Seattle's starting outfielders, but Carrera profiles as a valuable reserve. tripleplay83
Does Rube Amoron have a clue? Sounds like this new guy is the same as Inciarte. How about someone not from the scrap heap? Another "Band-Aid Ballplayer" to go with the Durbins of the world. gentian- It's very simple: the Phils OF is all about the money. In essence, the plan is how little can the team spend on outfielders, because far too much money is tied up in huge contracts with infielders and pitchers.
Saving money was the reason why they dumped Victorino and Pence last year and why we have the outfield we have this year. If the "money" guys do not produce, we will be in really bad shape in 2013. Time for Hamels, Lee, Halladay, Papelbon, Howard, Utley and Rollins to earn their keep. And maybe some less expensive talent will surprise us all. DPinDC

How can Mayberry be considered major league talent? Disco Dave
Are the owner and GM related because I can't understand how he has a job? He has made the team nearly irrelevant now and in the future only a footnote in baseball. wmontanez27
He was listed in a MLB article recently about the best players that are out of options and probably would be traded. He probably is more capable of hitting at the major league level until Delmon Young returns than Encierte would have been, and has just as much speed. It's an upgrade, and when Chooch and Young are back in May, there will be another upgrade. drbob1
Cholly plays Mayberry because he likes looking at the back of Jr.'s uniform. It reminds the tired, old fool of home. Wilhelm Von Humboldt

Kind of opens the door to a Mayberry trade in my mind. Possibly a reliever or back up infielder. tony bell
Mayberry is clearly running thin on time to show he can play consistently, but it's equally clear the Phils are going to give him every opportunity to succeed and have a lot invested in him. I know a lot of you hate him, rightfully so based on his inconsistent play to this point, but he's shown flashes of power and is a better fielder than Nix, Brown or Young. If anyone is going to see less playing time it's Nix. I don't get Nix, never have, never will but he has played for a number of years and probably makes a lot more money than the other reserves in OF making it much harder to get rid of him. I like picking up a speed guy if you can mix in a small ball lineup some nights that can eek out a few cheap runs while the big unit is striking out it just might buy you a few more wins and a wild card birth. Of course Charlie prefers the long ball approach, but I think this year he's going to be forced to change if he expects to have a job here next year. Sandberg is waiting and watching, and he will surely have a different approach. TrollXterminator
What is Rube thinking? Carrera has a career .255 Batting Average, 2 Home Runs and 25 RBI's. He has been released by four different teams and is another "BAND AID" player. Heck, I would rather have Ruf and Orr on the roster. Rube and "The Dope" are clueless. That fact that they changed the roster after only one day tells you all you need to know about the 2013 Edition of our PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES. PATHETIC! cleusner
@Advantasux: I think he had a good look at the 2 Upton brothers and Heyward in the outfield last night and realized a full year of Inciarte, let alone Nix and Mayberry is a non-starter. Either way, this latest acquisition is not the makings of a championship caliber outfield and with that, I lay it all on RAJ. To let Frank Wren get both Upton's to complement Heyward may prove to be a fatal flaw.
In conclusion: We got played into thinking Ruf could be a left fielder, that is, until the first ball his way ruined that thought. We got snookered by the Braves. And as a consolation prize, we got the spring time version of Andrew Bynum in the form of DYoung, who is better served as a DH, but serving time in a National League town. DelawareRiverRat- @DRR, as always, well said.
Snookered by failed expectations for Ruf or not, exactly what could Amaro have been thinking in those January and February weeks when the Braves continued to strengthen their outfield and entire team while he was holding tight to an outfield keyed by a singles hitter in center and riding on the hopes pinned to hardly-tested Domonic Brown and never-tested Darin Ruf? This man is paid to put the most competitive team on the field and, instead, he sat idly by, acting for all the world that his acquisition of Ben Revere was, in actuality, an acquisition of Willie Mays.
Amaro is off-the-charts in over his head. advantasux
is he better than mayberry or nix ? these guys should not start.bench players at best.go phillies..... phillysportsnut
Put Fransden in Right. Dude can hit. itstru
This outfield is a disaster. Dom Brown is lost out there. Mayberry has no place in the NL. Watching Nix is like torture. Wait til it is clear how bad Revere is defensively. Good thing Araro didn't go after Beltran, Willingham, Kubel or Cuddyer, huh?? Copper34- Hey Toolbiscuit do you get up every morning looking to make a complete dope of yourself?
DogBiscuitthedope - I heard on Telemundo that Carrera has the highest batting average in the history of Tuesday day night doubleheaders played against sub-350 teams when the right handed starter is pulled before the 7th inning due to an injury and is replaced by a left handed reliever with less than 27 2/3 career innings in the Pacific Coast League.

Please let's try to put this is perspective.
1. Upton and Upton--they were both good high priced pick-ups for the Braves and I personnaly would have liked to have seen Justin on the Phillies. I think and have long felt that BJ was overrated. Both of them ave long swings that make them prone to strikeouts--but they made the Braves better--not invincible but better.
2. The Phillies made it pretty clear that they would be looking at the DFA list for additional OF help--I do not think this is a panic move. Even if Ruf lights up AAA and forces his way to the ML team--they will need to remove him in the late innings.
3. Even if Brown hits .350 with 25 HRs and if D. Young does the same, the team is going to need late inning subs to play defense.
4. Inciarte, while potentially a nice player, was in the right place at the wrong time. Three years ago--the team could have kept him on the roster for the entire season because they had 7 starters that played above average defense, while able to put the ball in play. As the team will be configured if/when D. Young joins the lineup both corners and 3rd Base are candidates for late innning defensive upgrades--Inciarte did not appear to be up to the task affensively.
5. Game one has been played--The one negative to watch closely is the situation with Durbin--you simply can not walk the lead-off batter in that situation--but it is one game not 50. Smoothellc
If you pause your DVR for a few secs it will sync up with the AM radio broadcast!! justacarpenter
Mayberry and Nix have got to go.They stink.Don't blame Cholly.Blame Amaro. He is the one who goes after these kind of stiffs. snowman100
mayberry is kind of like wes chamberlain. they look like they should be good players, but they simply are not.
turns out the reds were smart not to trade us, or anyone else, heisey, as he's now a starter for the next 3 months in cincy. jim715
If the Phillies needed a third baseman back in the eighties, and had Amaro been the GM, he would have passed on Brett and Schmidt and signed the low risk, high reward Joe Piscopo. dasher- How do ya explain the Phils having the best record in the major leagues in 2010 and 2011, the only two times in 129 years? Rube deserves some of the credit.
ToniBaloney
Prior to yesterday, Durbin was viewed as a good addition. One poor outing and it is Rube's fault. Get a clue, guys. ToniBaloney
If this guy hits, Mayberry will be back in Aunt Bea's kitchen by 4/15.
NewMick314
Good news, as it shows Amaro is deeply concerned about the outfield, as he should be. Nix and Mayberry are, simply, busts. Carrera is not the answer but is a marginal upgrade over Inciarte. When D. Young is ready, I hope we trade Mayberry for -- anything, a low-A prospect would be fine. Nix is untradeable at $1.25 million.
I am not a constant critic but it is unfathomable to me that we don't have 1 legit outfield prospect in AAA or AA. Every other organization seems to.
therealeman- sounds good, @realeman, but what the heck was he waiting for? Could he have possibly believed he had assembled the best possible team for the scads of money he has paid out for this team?
He is an amateur!!!!!!!!!!!! advantasux
herndon just won a chewing gum contest playing soft ball for the Willow Grove Crabs stoky
This guy's slash line is worse than Inciarte! What, exactly, are they thinking? Just because Carrera spent time at a higher level in the minors does not mean he's the better pick. Both of them are fast. What gives with this stupid front office? Just a day ago, Inciarte was the second coming of the Secretary of Defense. Now, he's persona non grata. Typical Amoron move. Senseless. ghost of callison- The difference is Inciarte's line is a single-A line. Carrera's is in the majors. Inciarte really isn't ready yet. Carrera may not be much better though. I think they're trying to do two things: make things work until Delmon Young is ready and get some younger outfielders in the system since guys like Gillies don't seem like they'll ever make it to the majors.
Mayberry's not a bad bench player. I'd take him over Nix if I had a choice of which one to trade. Mayberry is generally an above average defender but he seems to have regressed in all areas of his game. He also has decent PH numbers (Nix's are horrible).
Brown looks better at the plate and he carried that to the first game. His defense looks like it took a huge step back under the bright lights though. I'm really not convinced that moving him to LF and giving Delmon Young RF is a good move. We know Brown is a guy who seems to thrive on consistency. I thought he looked better in RF in spring training. If it were me, I'd have let him continue in RF and put the platoon guys in LF then make Delmon Young win RF. "Delmon Young" and "field" are still having a hard time connecting in my brain. Either way, Brown's got to pick up his defense. s - @s, I find it equally baffling that they would tamper with what was working for Domonic Brown throughout the spring and almsot at the 11th hour, move his position from right to left. The kid was finally getting comfortable, appeared as though he was handling his defensive responsibilities without taking those worries to the plate, and then, the Twin Pillars of Stupidity move him over to left...to accommodate Delmon Young, of all people, and not for at least another month, apparently.
Just when you think you've seen everything from Bumbles and A Moron, Jr., they top themselves yet again. advantasux - @ghost, great post. Another amazing about-face by the resident genius, just so he could pick up more useless trash discarded by another hopeless team.
I hadn't seen you post in the last few days leading up to the season and was beginning to wonder if you had lost interest in helping spread the word about what a wonderful job this GM has done. advantasux - @advanta, thanks brother. A Moron, Jr. never ceases to baffle the mind. He's like that fickle 12 year old girl that can't make up her mind between two guys, even though both of them are losers.
I've been around, but just when I think I've seen it all from the likes of the Amaro/Manuel tandem, Amaro pulls another move only Amaro would make and Manuel manages to mismanage once again. No, you, I and others that can see how stupid (baseball-wise) that Amaro and Manuel are will have fodder for as long as those two misfits are with the team. Hopefully, this year is their swan song. Good talking with you, my friend.
I'm worried, but not just about the Phillies. I've read most of the Phillies articles here today and have not seen warbscuit's several dozen or so informative posts. If anyone knows him, please go over to his house and see if he's OK. I fear that Howard's awful at bat in the 5th may have done him in. dasher
@advantasux, in order to get this fan base fired up and completely behind our fightin' Phils, I was wondering if you would consider changing your screen name to @atlantasux?
dasher
Some of you Phillies fans make me laugh. Yeah, they got rid of a guy who never made it out of single A for a guy who has major league experience. Inciarte was going when Delmon Young comes back this month anyway. I still remember fans asking for Cole Hamels to be traded after his down year in 2009. Matt Rizzotti would be playing first base if it was up to some of you people. ndinardi79- Stop laughing and start getting concerned about the mismanagement of this team. I know Amaro and Manuel are easy targets when it comes to laughing, but a TRUE fan who cares about the team needs to voice their displeasure when management starts going on the cheap, even in the face of the largest fan support ever. Laugh all you want, but if you're a true Phillies' fan, you're close to tears with the way this team has been mismanaged the last 2-3 years.
- Another stupid comment. They IMPROVED with this move......Jesus. You people aren't happy unless every player is a .300 plus hitter with 30 plus homeruns. You're not going to get that .
ndinardi79 - Keep laughing all the way into fourth place this year. The only thing that keeps this team from last place is the woeful Marlin franchise, a team that is perpetually rebuilding, but STILL managed to win as many World Series as our Phillies have, only they did it in the span of 6-7 years. We've been around for over 100 years with the same amount of World Series Championships.
- If the Phillies did what the Marlins did, you would've been complaining the year after each World Series they won. That's because they had to dismantle the team each year they won, since they couldn't afford to keep the team together. That's what happens when you buy World Series. They tried again last season and it didn't work and they dismantled the team again.
ndinardi79
I'd dump Durbin and bring in Carlos Zambrano, in an instant. Zpack is a head case (he can join DYoung), but he can also start...ya know...just in case. drhoffman
Gelb has the rule 5 stipulation reversed the Phillies must first offer Inciarte back to the Diamondbacks and then if they don't want to buy him back then they can waive him. If he is not claimed then he can be assigned to whatever farm team the Phillies choose to send him. Here's the rule: If the player does not remain on the Major League roster, he is offered back to the team from which he was selected for $25,000. If his original team declines, the receiving team may waive the player. JBS67
@dasher, if I thought it would help, I'd do it, but to tell you the truth, I'm more inclined to change it to @amarosux. advantasux
@advantasux, that sounds mighty good to me, and I will then change mine to amarodasherofallhope!
BTW: Where do you suppose @warbiscuit is today? Should we worry? dasher
@amarodasherofallhope...funny play on your handle and mine in one shot and also has a nice ring to it. Anyway, even if it didn't, who am I to question the undisputed king of funny handles? Amazing to see how frequently your Ruin Tomorrow handle is used these days.
As for @war, funny you would write and ask that. I saw that you wrote to pose the same question almost 3 hours ago and I had the same thought all evening long. I must have checked 5 or 6 times today to see what funny things he wrote, but there's nothing, anywhere, on any story.
Seriously, it's like the guy spent weeks and months getting ready for the Prom and then didn't show up to pick up his date. Where the heck could he be?
I keep trying to get a mental image of him...does he seem to be a dad who maybe just took his kids to DisneyWorld and is offline for the next ten days while he and the kiddies are posing with Mickey? No? Can't picture that?
How about he's in Special Ops and he was home these past several months in between missions in Afghanistan and he headed back there this past week? Does that work any better?
If neither of those scenarios work, could it be possible that one of his fans on this site found out where he lived and beat and gagged him? I'm concentrating hard and am beginning to get a fuzzy image of him tied up and laying on the floor inches away from his keyboard and monitor and he's seeing that you and I are at least asking about him.
@War, hello! Give us a shout if you can! @dash, @ghost and I are worried about you. If @dogbiscuit is there, tell him to lighten up.
advantasux- @advanta, one thing I NEVER do is respond to any of @dogs**ts posts. He's an imbecile who never provides anything to any discussion other than hide behind his "wittle keyboard" throwing tiny spitballs in the form of insults that he would NEVER say to someone's face. He reminds me of someone that was so bullied in school that he lashes out now in the comfort (and safety) of his own (or his mother's) house. EVERYONE should ignore him.
- Of course, I'm talking about DOGBISCUITTHEMORON, not Warbiscuit. Warbiscuit, no matter what his detractors say, is usually right on the money whereas his Amaro/Manuel koolaid drinking sheep detractors hide their heads in the sand and accept every ridiculous move Amaro and Manuel make. I guess they don't realize how stupid they sound when they defend the indefensible.
@advantasux, that was such a tremendous post! I'm thinking that after watching last night's debacle, he renounced all worldly involvement and is headed for Tibet to become a monk and live a life of Philabacy. That means no titles for the rest of his life. dasher
@dash, he headed to Tibet and took a vow of "Philabacy"? Meaning no titles for the rest of his life? Dear Lord, my man, you are one funny human being. I am laughing hysterically over here. Where do you come up with this stuff?
Seriously, even as we're writing this goofy stuff about him, it does boggle the mind that @war would voluntarily pick yesterday and today as the days to go dark on us. I keep picking thru the obits looking for any clue, any moniker that suggests "war" or "biscuits", and I'm checking the local crime logs for any background that would tip us off as to his whereabouts. I am actually concerned, I won't lie to you.
@ghost, I hear ya about @dogbiscuit, there's never the need to debate his posts because they're nothing but bashes of all other folks write. He seems to be ignoring my posts of late, probably because you and a few others (@Copper, most notably) have written more acerbic stuff than I have the past week or two. advantasux- @advanta, one thing you can count on is @dogface showing up. He's like a bad penny or the mother-in-law you can never get rid of.

worst imbecile of a g.m. in history of baseball warbiscuit- Welcome back @war. If you're like me, you're getting tired of beating a dead horse. That is, until tomorrow when both Amaro and Manuel will somehow find a way to give us more endless cannon fodder in the form of relentless ridiculous moves and decisions.
@dogscat is merely a fly on the great windshield of life. Pay him no mind.
One final thought, and then I must get to sleep, because I have to be fully ready and alert to help get Doc through the Braves' lineup tonight:
You have probably read how some of the video gamers can literally die at the keyboard, so absorbed in racking up points that they take no break for food, drink, rest, or even bathroom. I picture @warbiscuit in a windowless, cramped room at the keyboard, haggard and unshaven, surrounded by walls plastered with hundreds of clippings of bad Phillies' trades, free agents lost, draft choices squandered, etc. There are countless surveillance photos of Amaro, Proefrock, Monty, Giles, Wheels, and many others...but mainly Amaro, his head circled in red. I picture poor @warbiscuit slumped over his keyboard with philly.com on his screen and a piece of paper jammed in his printer that repeats, over and over, "All work and no play makes biscuit a dull boy."
Hopefully, the EMTs will reach him in time... dasher
@ghost, now that @war rejoined us, no doubt @dog isn't far behind. He has an intravenous drip in his arm attached to this site, and it activates when he sees a certain four or five of us out here.
@war, where the h*ll have you been? Been searching all over for you, my man. Now is not the time to fade into the darkness. You've primed the pump all winter long. This is going to get ugly real fast, I think. advantasux- @advanta, had to hit the hay a little earlier last night, but I hear you regarding @doggystyle. The thing is, you can't draw him out when you try -- he's too much of a narcissist to allow himself to be dragged out screaming like a little girl by one of us, UNLESS he's the one that initiates the attack. He'll show up eventually, spewing his cowardly vile yellow bile that continues to permeate the website like Satan's breath. Too bad he's just a lonely little boy looking for attention.

@dash, will be turning in myself in a minute. Not sure if you watch a show called The Following (with Kevin Bacon Monday nights on Fox) but the leader of the crazy cult is a guy named Joe Carroll and he has a legion of followers who can be activated for mayhem at a moment's notice.
That's who I picture @war as.
@war, we're just having fun here, my friend. We were a bit surprised not to see you out here with us all day long. advantasux
