Phillies acquire O'Sullivan to complete Blanton trade

POSTED: Thursday, August 16, 2012, 2:31 PM

MILWAUKEE — The Phillies received single-A righthander Ryan O'Sullivan from Los Angeles as the player to be named later to complete a trade for Joe Blanton.

O'Sullivan, 21, was a fourth-round draft pick of the Dodgers in 2011. He began the season as a starter but transitioned to a relief role upon being promoted to high single-A Rancho Cucamonga. While there, he posted a 3.57 ERA in 14 games with 12 strikeouts and eight walks in 17 2/3 innings. He has only 60 strikeouts in 97 career professional innings.

Baseball America ranked O'Sullivan as Los Angeles' 23rd-best prospect before the 2012 season.

He could not be included in the deal until Thursday because he was drafted last summer. Major League Baseball rules stipulate a player cannot be dealt less than a year after being drafted.

Wow traded away our most productive pitcher for the 23rd best prospect on the Dodgers. Can you say salary dump? $8 for a can of beer and you give players away for a song?

where is all of this hate coming from? 2012 is over and blanton is a free agent this winter. they dumped salary (staying under the luxary tax and helping the finances for 2013) and got something in return. i have no problem with this move. i still want RAJ to be fired soon, but I have no problem with this move.

From where comes the hurt? The usual Negadelphic boo boo birdies! Same old story, isn't it. I sometimes think its utterly remarkable that ANY athlete chooses to come or to stay in Philadelphia when they can be very nearly certain they will be booed and ridiculed far more than they will be cheered. It's been that way since at least 1949 when I went to my first Phillies game. After a homer and two singles, and I don't know how many RBI the idiots booed Del Ennis for a strikeout in the eighth inning.

I guess people expect a top flight prospect for a 2 month rental of a 5+ era pitcher.

fyi for the ignorant and uninformed: "middle relievers" and worse "middle reliever prospects" means failed pitchers who can't start or relieve or get batters out consistently and are kept in an organization as an excuse to fill the 25-man and 40-man rosters --see, e.g., Herndon, Rosenberg, Schwimer, Valdes, Baez, Qualls, Kendrick, Tashner, Register, Andrew Carpenter, Mathieson, Zagurski, Savery, etc...Clueless Rube is an expert at accumulating, signing and trading for as many useless non-talented so-called pithcer as any imbecile in history of baseball
