Phillies acquire O'Sullivan to complete Blanton trade

POSTED: Thursday, August 16, 2012, 2:31 PM

MILWAUKEE — The Phillies received single-A righthander Ryan O'Sullivan from Los Angeles as the player to be named later to complete a trade for Joe Blanton.

O'Sullivan, 21, was a fourth-round draft pick of the Dodgers in 2011. He began the season as a starter but transitioned to a relief role upon being promoted to high single-A Rancho Cucamonga. While there, he posted a 3.57 ERA in 14 games with 12 strikeouts and eight walks in 17 2/3 innings. He has only 60 strikeouts in 97 career professional innings.

Baseball America ranked O'Sullivan as Los Angeles' 23rd-best prospect before the 2012 season.

He could not be included in the deal until Thursday because he was drafted last summer. Major League Baseball rules stipulate a player cannot be dealt less than a year after being drafted.

This is the difference-maker we've been looking for to push us over the top in 2013.

Good, now that it's after August 15 ( one year past the deadline for a draft pick to sign), we should know about the other PTBN in the Victorino deal.

Want to save the Phillies for 2013? I have two words for you.
Steve Jeltz. His long, curly locks, switch hitting and deckshoes worn without socks are just what the Phils need. He can play third. I vote for Jeltz.

We already have Jeltz 2.0... He's playing SS and leading off

Look at the bright side: We don't have to watch Blanton pitch any more.

Careful what you wish for eman, would you rather have Blanton or Kendrick in the rotation?

Actually, neither of them. But thanks so much, Amaro, for finally unloading Fat Joe. Hopefully, he'll end up like Lidge---out of baseball.

"Prospect" O'Sullivan -- when I look up the word "prospect" it shows "hope," "vision," "potential" -- then I read O'Sullivan's stats -- only 60 strikeouts in 97 innings; 12 Ks and 8 BB in 17 innings. Instead of O'Sullivan it read "Oy Vey!"

Strikeouts are, most likely, the most over-rated datum in all of the number collecting in baseball. It's no more than a ground ball to anyone excepting Jimmy Rollins, and it's really difficult to turn double plays on them!
I don't know of the guy at all, and statistics really are the BIG lie!
    GOOD GRIEF.

I've always been a fan of this guy, I especially liked "Alone Again, Naturally" and "Claire".
