Phillies acquire O'Sullivan to complete Blanton trade

POSTED: Thursday, August 16, 2012, 2:31 PM

MILWAUKEE — The Phillies received single-A righthander Ryan O'Sullivan from Los Angeles as the player to be named later to complete a trade for Joe Blanton.

O'Sullivan, 21, was a fourth-round draft pick of the Dodgers in 2011. He began the season as a starter but transitioned to a relief role upon being promoted to high single-A Rancho Cucamonga. While there, he posted a 3.57 ERA in 14 games with 12 strikeouts and eight walks in 17 2/3 innings. He has only 60 strikeouts in 97 career professional innings.

Baseball America ranked O'Sullivan as Los Angeles' 23rd-best prospect before the 2012 season.

He could not be included in the deal until Thursday because he was drafted last summer. Major League Baseball rules stipulate a player cannot be dealt less than a year after being drafted.

People sounding lame commenting on a player they've never seen pitch...The other 4rth rounder fromn the 2011 Draft that RAJ picked up this season in a deal (Kyle Simon-Thome trade) has been lights out to date as a Phillie...Feel free to jump ship at any time.

I believe much of the idiot clown contingent was expecting the dreaded "player to be named later" to be Clayton Kershaw. Frankly, I too wish many of them would jump ship and move on down to what they deserve: the Chicago Cubs. As Harry Carey put it, "Any team can have a bad century!"

sure looks like an "eddie wade" special. low grade, middle relief pitcher. will probably need a ticket to see the show.

O'Sullivan is regarded as having better stuff (fastball 92-94, biting curveball 80-82, and a good sinker) than his brother Sean, who has bounced around with the Angels and the Royals...Ryan O'Sullivan was the heir apparent to Steven Strasberg as the Ace for San Diego State, but got injured, and transferred...He's been mostly bullpen this year, relying on his sinking fastball to get groundball outs...Not a power pitcher..An arm...We need bats.

All the Phillies wanted in this deal was to dump Blanton's salary. I haven't seen anywhere how much the Dodgers picked up, but if it was the rest of the salary for the year then the deal served it's purpose whether O'Sullivan ever advances beyond Reading or not. Also, by his name, he's clearly Japanese.

According to tired, old Cholly Manuel this guy could start for just about every team in the Nl and AL next year.

For those who are complaining about O'Sullivan, I just watched Blanton give up eight runs in 4+ innings against the Pirates. Three more home runs and a triple to of all people Clint Barmes. O'Sullivan is looking better already.

@sweetserik: I forgot about Get Down, that might have been the best one. You're right though, Naturally is pretty depressing, I was mostly going for the obscure reference, and 2 people got it, not bad lol.

I'm the first in line to skewer Ruben for his missteps, but honestly, after the Phillies showed they weren't going to eat a lot of salary to trade Blanton to the Orioles, what did you think the Phillies were going to get for fat Joe?

Well Lind. just gave up the winning homer to Hart so now we have 2 Dodgers who don't seem worth much.

Ruben and Chollie show once again why they're the biggest imbeciles to ever run or manage a major league baseball team -- Rube gets the worst useless trash and Chollie is stupid enough to use them .... and
Phlly sportswriters have the idiocy to daily write how these two imbeciles are not to blame... so the question who is to blame for acquring Lindlom and get literally nothing of value for any player he has ever traded away and who is to balme for mis-using the useless sh$% to turn a win into another absurd devastating loss?
