The Phillies re-signed catcher Brian Schneider to a one-year, $800,000 contract on Thursday.

Schneider can earn as much as $1 million with an additional $200,000 in incentives tied to games played. It's a pay cut for Schneider, who earned $1.5 million in 2011.

The Northampton native made 36 starts for the Phillies last season and the team went 28-8 (.777), including 27-3 (.900) in his first 30 starts. From May 7 through September 6, the Phillies went 19-0 in Schneider’s starts.  At the plate, Schneider batted .176 with two home runs and nine RBI in 41 games.

With Schneider behind the plate in 2011, Phillies pitchers posted a 2.85 ERA and he threw out 13% (3-23) of potential basestealers.  He ranks seventh among active catchers in most runners thrown out (194), trailing Ivan Rodriguez (563), Jason Kendall (392), Jorge Posada (324), Ramon Hernandez (258), Jason Varitek (251) and Henry Blanco (237).

Throughout his major league career, Schneider has played exclusively for National League East Division teams.  He has a lifetime .247 batting average with 65 home runs and 380 RBI in 1,014 games for the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals (2000-07), New York Mets (2008-09) and Phillies (2010-11).

Hooray (insert sarcasm and rolled eyes). This guy should play for free just for the opportunities he has received for becoming Phillies player. In case I'm being too subtle, I just don't like the guy one bit.

If they throw that kind of money around to this lump, they need to throw Valdez a bone. Its insulting what they pay him.

Phils went 1-5 in last 6 starts -- you can frame the stats any way you want -- bottom line he can't hit o field so why he is he on the team?

Amaro said a couple of days ago that it was a priority to get a backup catcher. I thought that meant a real backup catcher. A million bucks down the drain and still need a backup catcher.

I also have no arm or bat but can catch a baseball. I'm several years younger and would sign for the league minimum. Call me Rubes.

I'm confused on what backup catcher is available for under 800,000 bucks...

Doumit, Hernandez- both probably want more PA and more money than this deal.

Kratz is a nice player in the IL but he's 31. Maybe there's a reason he hasn't made a ML roster?

Schnider had a career bad year. We can probably expect see him regress to his mean a little bit and be better next year offensively. Catcher defense is really hard to measure but CS% and W-L are not the way to do it. CS involves much more than just the catcher throwing down to a base.

The pitchers like throwing to him, and his career numbers show that he will hit better next year. Hard to get to up or down by the signing of a back up catcher.

At this point in his career Brian Schneider is likely to pull a hammy just lacing his shoes up....Hopefully, erik Kratz is still in the system, and maybe he'll get to show the brass what he can do, since his spring training will mean zilch as there will be no competition for a job...I'm still wondering what Chuck LaMar's problem with Ruben was.

he may have done some good things with the staff but our bench is now weaker with bringing hime back. With the exception of Thome, our bench is no different this year. Valdez while good defensively, cant hit at all, Martinez stinks ie .196 batting avg. Schneider couldnt hit a beach ball with a tennis racket. I thought they were revamping the bench??
