Pence injures knee; out for Game 2
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
UPDATE 6:13 p.m.: So Hunter Pence is not in the lineup for Game 2, as Charlie Manuel said he would earlier. Apparently the vague "knee soreness" was enough to bench Pence in a meaningless game.
The full lineup:
1. Jimmy Rollins 6
2. Placido Polanco 5
3. Shane Victorino 8
4. Chase Utley 4
5. John Mayberry Jr. 3
6. Raul Ibanez 7
7. Ben Francisco 9
8. Carlos Ruiz 2
9. Cliff Lee 1
EARLIER: Not much is known about Hunter Pence's knee injury, other than the fact that he hobbled after an infield single in the first inning -- and for the next five innings -- until he was removed in the sixth.
Charlie Manuel said the injury is not serious and that Pence will start in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader. What knee he injured, what the injury actually is, and when it happened is all unknown.
"His knee is a little sore or something from sliding and things," Manuel said,
Pence's only comment was "I'm good," followed by a thumb's up.
Until the sixth, Pence had played in every inning of every game since his aquisition on July 30. Manuel said he'll rest Pence later in the week.
The Phillies used 24 players in Game 1.

These games are meaningless, right? PhightinPhil
This doesn't shock me from this manager. Absolutely ridiculous. Don't understand. This guy was whining about needing more offense and now that he has what he wanted is jeopardizing Pence's health by playing him after he got injured and now in the second game of meaningless double header. EL Zorro
WHY IS Pence playing two games in 1 day with a bruised KNEE...this game is meaningless, Pence needs to ice and rest his knee. frank105
I know this manager is absolutely horrible! For two straight years he has produced the best record in all of baseball. Won a World Series in 08', took them again in 09', he should be fired immediately. He is a disgrace of a manager who by the end of this year will also have more wins than any other Philly manager and will soon lead the Phillies to the best record in franchise history. If he's not the worst manager in the game then I don't know who is. josea3
Pence shouldn't have been out there in game #1. D Brown should have played right. Clearly the Phillies were siting the early game out. cake2025
if your going to rest the regulars then Pence should be rested.
charlie makes no sense sometimes. Bob65S
and now they've lost 7 of last 11..Charlie doing everything he can do create a losing atmosphere by putting these game in the hands of such non-players as Brandon Moss (who?), Francisco, Bowker, Gload, Schwimmer, Kratz, Orr and Stutes ... didn't fans pay good money for tickets to a major league game? seems Charlie just wants to avoid racking up too many wins so that he won't be accused of underachieving when he loses in the post-season.... what a loser .,,, if Charlie knew what he's doing how did he lose to a vastly inferior team in the NLCS last year by getting completely outmanaged on every single bench and bullpen decision...Charlie has shown no ability to win except when handed a set bullpen as he had in 2008 and an excellent bench compiled by Gilick (and since ignored by Amaro) and a bench coach like Jimmy Wilaims to help the strategically-challenged ol Forrest Gump warbiscuit- wow. I think I just found the dumbest Phillies fan alive.

I heard on DNL (From Stan Hochman) that the reason Charlie keeps putting his regular out there is because he owes it to the Braves and other teams to play his regulars because they're are battling for the wild card and because he's old school. If that's the reason he's a bigger fool than I thought. That's a lot of BS. That old school stuff is old. Maybe he doesn't remember Clint Hurdle sending Lidge to warm up like 10 times during the AS game a few years ago and Bochy pitching both Halladay and Lee more than an inning while resting his players. Nonsense. Maybe he wants the team season record, instead. EL Zorro
keep in mind the Phillies regular lineup has been together for four times this month. However, the unclutchness of game 1 starters is appalling. palmyra21
History shows that Manuel goes with what the player says regarding injuries...Pence sees 100 RBIs on the horizon and lefthanded starters..Cholly is a fool if he plays Pence in game 2. They'll win the needed games just because of the pitching to get to 103..who cares. bearsfriend
Charlie is the Casey Stengel of this era. If this team gets in the WS against the Yankees, we can let them know we have Casey the Second.....the way he talks and everything about him. sonnybuoy01
I guess Amaro overruled him. Thanks God.

and maybe RAJ had nothing to do with it. You people are getting ridculous. How about we refrain from over-analyzing the rest of the season. Play them, rest them, keep them sharp, whatever. They've clearly backed off the throttle regardless of what Charlie or RAJ or Montgomery or Wheels wants...it's obvious the men in the clubhouse feel they can fire up the engines when the second season begins. We'll see... Grazman
