Pedro starts Wednesday, Moyer to pen

POSTED: Monday, August 10, 2009, 4:52 PM

Who deserves the last spot in the rotation?
Pedro Martinez
Jamie Moyer

The Phillies have announced that Pedro Martinez will start Wednesday. They have also told Jamie Moyer that he will be headed to the bullpen.  Though the team has long maintained that Moyer's stuff was not suited for a relief role, Happ's recent dominance left them with little choice but to make this move.

In three rehab starts, Martinez was 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA, and 16 strikeouts in 12.1 innings.

Happ will start tomorrow and Cliff Lee Thursday, a full week after his previous start.

Also, the Phils activated Chad Durbin from the DL and optioned Rodrigo Lopez to Lehigh Valley.

Rich Dubee is the worst pitching coach in baseball. Since the Cliff Lee trade last Thursday, Cliff Lee is 2-0 and the other Dubee dreck starters that he contaminated are 1-8. FIRE RICH DUBEE NOW! Replace him with Leo Mazzone for the strecth run for a wake up call! FIRE RICH DUBEE NOW

I agree with getting Moyer out of the starting rotation but don't agree with Pedro even being on this team & not even starting out in the bullpen as a mopeup pitcher(Will be another bombs away just like Moyer.

Good move. If it doesn't work out for Pedro (I think he will be good) they can move Moyer back into the rotation.

Fire Scoobee dooobee do as if he could make a difference with this bunch. How about asking Milt whats up with Howard and his 133+ strikeouts. Look this group is in a funk and having a 7 game lead was too much to handle. Time to get out of Dodge and win some on the road.

Have to agree that we might need a new pitching coach. Two All Stars and MVP pitchers from last year (Hamels and Lidge) have been struggling for months. That's a coaching thing. Make the move.

Milt's improvement with Rollins was short lived, and plenty of players are in hitting slumps and erratic hitting. Milt and Dubee are slacking. It's a coaching thing at this point - Charlie needs some help with batting and pitching instruction from his associates. What to do?

I don't get the logic of pushing Lee back to thursday. He is their best pitcher. Would you not want him to get the most starts of any of them. Lee should pitch Tues, Happ on Wed & Pedro on thurs leaving Hamels, Blanton, & Lee vs Atlanta. Moyer needed to be replaced, there is no doubt of that. You can't win on past performance just ask Cole hamels

Happ said on CSN that he had already purchased at least 20 tickets for friends and family to watch him pitch Tuesday. Maybe he knew earlier? Moyer to the pen is the right move.

Jim G-- our meds are just fine, thank you very much. I agree with your observation that we need to chill a bit re: Martinez and see what he can do. Moyer will still be around to step in in Pedro does as I expect he will. Now, as far as the team is concerned, we have every right to be concerned. Have you seen or heard the last 8 to 10 games? Sloppy, lacksadasical play. Absolutely no hitting. Lidge no where near the lights out he was last year and on and on. Pedro or Moyer should be the LEAST of the team's worries!

Ok, so Moyer isn't that good. This I agree with. Why anyone thinks that after Pedro can't go 5 innings in the minors he'll be able to do anything in the majors is beyond me. Stop buying into the 11 K's in the minors KoolAid the Phils are selling. Pedro is WORSE than Moyer. Basically, the Phillies have no 5th starter, and no one available to even try to be a 5th starter.
