Pedro starts Wednesday, Moyer to pen

POSTED: Monday, August 10, 2009, 4:52 PM

Who deserves the last spot in the rotation?
Pedro Martinez
Jamie Moyer

The Phillies have announced that Pedro Martinez will start Wednesday. They have also told Jamie Moyer that he will be headed to the bullpen.  Though the team has long maintained that Moyer's stuff was not suited for a relief role, Happ's recent dominance left them with little choice but to make this move.

In three rehab starts, Martinez was 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA, and 16 strikeouts in 12.1 innings.

Happ will start tomorrow and Cliff Lee Thursday, a full week after his previous start.

Also, the Phils activated Chad Durbin from the DL and optioned Rodrigo Lopez to Lehigh Valley.

I don't understand why Lee isn't pitching tomorrow.... Time for Pedro to show what he is made of.

Gotta be a 5-man rotation, the best have to start and that just clearly is not Moyer. Is Lee being pushed back a day? That doesn't make any sense.

JHS I agree; rotation should have been reset to maximum number of starts for Lee... That being said... Happ kick starts us off against the baby bears.... Means a lot for him to set the tone; will be interesting to watch Pedro - which, I believe, will be a national televised game....

I love Jamie, but buy his contract out and sign him as part of the coaching crew for next year. We gave him what he wanted in a 2 yr deal, but let's be honest, he has pitched every bit of a 46 yr old and we should not expect much more.

sometimes, a workhorse? If you consider a horse that only gets you half way to the lumber will, with half a load left a work horse, then yep...he's a workhorse.

Lee has pitched three complete games in his last five starts. This decision likely will not impact the number of starts he gets the remainder of the year -- and think anout it, if we can close the division out with some time to spare (as we all hope to), you absolutely do not want him pitching the last day or two of the season anyway. Can't see how it hurts to give him an extra day, people should relax about Lee.

Geez, some of you people need to up the meds. It will be okay, climb back off the ledge. Same people that wrote off the Phils at the end of last August when they trailed the Mets by 5 games in the NL East. Unless you've sat at Pedro's games and watched him pitch, you've got no idea what he's throwing like right now other than just guessing from a linescore. Amaro, Kerfield and Lemar have all watched him pitch in person...if they think he's throwing well enough to start him, then I trust their judgment. Let's see what the guy can do.

Rich Dubee is the worst pitching coach in baseball. Since the Cliff Lee trade last Thursday, Cliff Lee is 2-0 and the other Dubee dreck starters that he contaminated are 1-8. FIRE RICH DUBEE NOW! Replace him with Leo Mazzone for the strecth run for a wake up call! FIRE RICH DUBEE NOW!
