Unless there is something else in the works (i.e. Halladay), this really doesn't make sense to me. If we're talking 4th or 5th in the rotation, why not plug in one of our young guys who cost nothing and need the experience? Does anyone see this as an upgrade to what we already have? I sure don't. flyerdup- If Pedro is throwing in the low 90's, like reported, and he passes his physical tomorrow, I don't see why this is a bad signing. Pedro is one of the smartest pitchers I've ever seen. He's strike/walk ratio is off the charts also, and his fastball, even in the low 90's, will look like in the mid 90's with all the other pitches he has. No many pitchers make hitters guess in the batter box better than Pedro. Another thing Pedro brings to the staff is toughness, something most of our pitchers, and some position players lack. There won't be many hitters trying to take the outside part of the plate with Pedro on the mound. EL Zorro
Can't hurt. I'm excited. Back to back. KINGOFZED
No Happ and no Drabek in Haladay deal period!! PhillyNH
Bringing Pedro in may be a good short term solution if he can still perform . He's had time to rest his body and does bring hall of fame credentials and knowledge with him. It's worth the gamble. PhillyNH- El Zorro - I've been against signing Pedro but your very convincing post makes me think twice about it. Might be a good move and hope that they don't then add Halladay as I don't want to lose Happ, Drabek and/or Taylor.
Only the amount of dollars involved will differentiate signing Pedro from the Freddy Garcia debacle. Pedro will not last the 1/2 season the Phillies are signing him for without spending time on the DL. Guaranteed! If Rube learned one thing from Gillick it should be to not sign broken down, once good pitchers, who are past their prime. SteveS11- How did a New Yorker get this gig.

Is El Duque on deck ? mick314
Not the savoir the rotation needs but a good move for the short term and another shot at winning the NL East George C- Sweet -- now the Phillies can trade Martinez for Halladay!!! Seriously though, I hope they make Martinez play in the Minors first. drog
- In 2007 he started the season 3-1 with a ERA of 2.55 in 5 games, stricking out 32 batters in 28 innings, then got hurt. Last year he also was hurt for a while. He also was pitching while he's father was very sick in the DR. As a matter of fact he left the team for a while. You have to give him the benefit of the doubt. This year he pitched well in the Classic and according to the Phillies, the scouts were impressed. The Mets, and other teams, did not sign him because of his outrageous contract demands. EL Zorro
- $$$$$$$$$$ Phillies Brass is saying they can't afford him! Can't some investors advance the Phillies some money and get repaid after the team gets to the play offs! LAME EXCUSE! Philies: Do you want to win!???
- moosemints...They're "saying" they can't afford him. They're also "saying" the have untouchables in their farm system. They'll probably "say" alot of the next few weeks. It's called posturing. booman55
