This is a solid move. If we are looking at him to be the fourth or fifth option, which is all we need him to be with the way that Blanton and Moyer have been pitching, coupled with the fact that cole will turn it around, I like it. That being said, i think that this opens up the possibility of adding J.A. Happ to a deal for Halladay.

I have no problem with adding Pedro. He's not a clubhouse cancer like Manny, he has a winning attitude and I bet he wants to prove he can still pitch at a high level. I don't know what he's got left in the tank, but let's find out. Not sure what if anything this implies for Halladay, but I doubt it means any lessening of Phillies interest in him.

Nothing wrong with this signing. And if he turns out to have a decent year, the added bonus is that we kept him away from rivals who need pitching.

I think the Phils are signing him because they know they'll be losing a pitcher or two soon in a trade...I think this means we're getting Halladay

Phils have a history of never trading for a premiere impact player at the deadline. Why would they start now? Halladay isn't coming here. Martinez is an experiment to see whether they'll go after a Joe Blanton type in August through the waiver wire.

how the heck does this guy fit in the clubhouse??? unless he tackles someone on the Mets coaching staff, he will bring nothing for us. He pitched 3 innings and we are ready to pull him in as the 4th or 5th option???? that is obsurd... He and Moyer back to back will destroy the bullpen. This is not a good idea.

phillies222 - Bastardo is a 5-6 inning guy, too. In a stretch drive I'd rather give the ball to Pedro than a still-raw rookie.

One hope left: Pedro doesnt have much left and it will surely be lost at the Philly Airport.

I can't see giving up Happ for Halladay. Moyer hasn't looked great, Happ's been the only reliable pitcher we have. We need Happ plus Halladay to dramatically improve the rotation.

phillies222 - are you a scout? Have you seen him pitch this year? How do you know what he can give us? He will spend a couple weeks in Reading or Lehigh for a few starts, so they will know if he's capable of giving them anything before they bring him up. 6 innings, >= 3 runs is a quality start. We generally don't get quality starts from 3/5 of our rotation. If he can give us quality starts, its an upgrade.

My 2 cents, as posted earlier under another article: A questionable Pedro for half a season, $4 mil, no prospects lost; or Roy Halladay for 1.5 seasons, about $15 mil, and loss of 3-4 top prospects. I don't blame Amaro for giving Pedro serious consideration. Since Pedro's arm is only good for half a season anyway, why not let him throw his arm out into retirement for a chance at another ring? Carrasco (and maybe Drabek) could be ready for next season, with Knapp in the wings for late year call-up if needed. Of course, Carlos' constant struggles add more questions than answers at this point for next season.

The Pedro signing is a great move as a number 4 or 5 starter. He can do no worse than what they have now. It's still a long season and you don't want a rookie to have too much weight on their shoulders ... we are playing to win this year, not in the future. Stakes are high and you could mentally hurt a young pitcher with too much of a burden. One last thought: Andy Martino's hair is laughable and his facial hair reminds me of the female anatomy.
