Lee in Game 4, Hamels or Blanton in a possible Game 5

POSTED: Saturday, October 10, 2009, 3:27 PM

Update: According to Charlie Manuel, Cliff Lee will start Game 4 Monday, and Joe Blanton and Cole Hamels are in the mix for a potential Game 5.  Hamels appears a more likely option, because he is a lefty.

"That’s on Hamels’ regular day, but it depends on how much we use (Joe) Blanton or Pedro in the next couple of days,” Manuel said. “I like left-handed pitchers against this team, and I think we match up better that way.”

Happ said that his bruised left leg is a "non issue."

Pedro Martinez is a man at peace with himself and the world.  Leaving the hotel restaurant minutes ago, Martinez was smiling despite losing his playoff start in Game 3 to J.A. Happ.

"It is the most reasonable thing to do," he said.  "I haven't thrown in 10 days. Difficult weather. Happ has been in there. He has a better feel for the ball."

Martinez said he would be ready to pitch in relief tomorrow.  "Yeah, I will be.  Anything."

He said he would  like to pitch in relief before starting another game, becuase it has been so long since he has thrown.

Hey Cole, now that you have a baby, you don't have to act like one yourself!

Agreed, mike. I'm still annoyed by Hamel's reaction when Howard made his lousy throw to second - it happens - move on. Zen-boy has lost his good kharma this year.

how quickly we turn on our WS hero. He didn't pitch well this year, but clearly, he deserves some respect.

I've gained a lot of respect for Pedro through this stint with the Phils. Highly competitive when between the lines but great perspective outside of them. Reminds me a bit of a former Eagle who is now making great plays in Denver (somewhat ironically). Too bad Pedro has the Don Zimmer incident in his closet.

Is it a given that Lee starts game 4, or is that only if the Phils lose game 3?

Pedro was simply reacting to Zimmer coming at him, and he did the most reasonable thing by not clocking the old fool. And I still laugh every time I get a mental image of that incident...

Good move to start Happ. Pedro will pitch some innings in this series.

Just as Ray Didinger said this morning: Hamels is like that kid in class who always had to have his #2 pencil sharpened and centered on his desk. If something is a little off, he can't function. Enough already. Next year, Cole, Lee is #1, Happ is #2, Blanton is #3, and, maybe, you're a #4. The league is filled with guys who go 10-11 with a 4+ ERA.

Pedro has been nothing short of a joy to have on this team. He harbors nor fault by what the old fool Zimmer did that day.

Any right-hander should understand the move. It should be happ, lee, hamels...left, left, left. Next year, I'd lock up Lee, and get a package together, that includes Hamels, to get that fella from Toronto.

Don Zimmer, you are brining up Don Zimmer? What the hell is wrong with you? who cares about something that happened 6 years ago and is hardly Matinez's fault.

No way Cole is behind Happ and Blanton in the rotation next year.
