When we get Holladay b/c Pedro helped make Happ expendable, come back and talk then. I love Happ, but you know Toronto is going to want a starter and high picks...

how is happ expendable? he is easily the best pitcher we have on our entire roster right now. he's the only starter that's undefeated and consistent, and his era of 2.90 is incredible when you consider that the next best starter's era is joe blanton's at 4.44.. DON'T TRADE HAPP!

Nova, because Toronto needs a good young and inexpensive starter to replace Halladay as part of any deal. To get Halladay, you have to give a lot. I was against trading Happ or any of our best prospects, but the way Hamels has pitched lately, I'm not so sure now. If they agree to take Happ, Donald, Marson, Carrasco and another prospect no named Dabrek, Taylor, Knapp or Brown, I’d be ok with the deal, I guess.

el zorro..
it just seems foolish to me to trade happ and our entire farm system for halladay. happ is 26 yrs old, 6-0, and has the 9th best ERA (2.90) in the MLB among starting pitchers.. halladay is 32 yrs old, 10-3, and has the 8th best ERA (2.85). we are only paying happ 400 K and we'd have him for years to come vs. over 15 million next year for halladay and then he'd most likely bounce. don't get me wrong, id absolutely love to have halladay, but i don't see how it makes sense to get rid of our best current pitcher, our best future pitcher in drabek, and several others to get him.

I know, nova. I would not trade both Happ and Drabek. It has to be one or the other. This is a difficult situation. In one hand, you have a nucleus here of Hamels, Madson, Victorino, Rollins, Werth, Utley and Howard who want to win now. What message is Amaro sending to them by keeping the prospects and not going hard for Halladay? I’ll bet you they would rather see the Phillies get the best pitcher in baseball, than see if Happ -or Drabek or any other prospect for that matter- has what it takes to deliver in the playoffs. In the other hand, there is not guarantee that Halladay will take us to the promise land either. Sabathia was great last year for the Brewers, and they had nothing to show for but a first round elimination. Then he was gone, along with the Brewers best prospect. The different here is that the Phillies get to keep Halladay for another year and have a chance to sign him. But then again, he could leave and all we can do is pray that the compensation picks we are getting after he leaves pan out, assuming he keeps his status as the best pitcher in the game and not get hurt or go south in a hurry, which is a long shot but a possibility. This is what is splitting the fan base, no to mention Amaro’s brain.

el zorro.. i completely agree. however, i think happ is legit. scouts have plenty of MLB film on him by now, and batters have still not been able to hit him. and you say you don't know if happ would be able to deliver in the playoffs, but halladay hasn't pitched in october yet either (but i'm sure he'd dominate). also, our players obviously want amaro to trade the farm system for halladay. why would they care how bad we are in 3 or 4 years, most of them will be gone by then anyway

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover
Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.
This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
